Some of the best rabbit hunting I ever had was in a milo field left standing. When snow came those rabbits migrated to it and it was fast action.

55 here this morning also. Ran the beagles for about 3 hours this morning and they were soaking wet from the heavy dew.
Ran them on conservation ground and lots of folks showing up to see if doves were in the sunflower patches. Most the patches didn't do very good this year due to being so dry. The heads were small and not many filled out.

To me those fields the MDC plants in sunflowers is a waste of my money. They are always shot out in a couple of days then nothing else benefits from that ground. I'd rather see them grown up in ragweed and foxtail which are both benefical for longer periods of time.

Years ago, the neighbor planted about 40 acres of sunflowers down at the farm. Had to find a buyer for the seeds. He used a combine that was on its last leg. Reason being those sunflower stalks are like wood and it sounded awful. A mile away it sounded like he was grinding bolts in a meat grinder. He said never again. Out pheasant hunting, they are fun to try to bust through. I dont think the MDOC is concerned about anything being a waste of money.

With that 1/8 of 1 cent sales tax money, they just don't know what do do with it all!

I've never hunted them, but I've heard stories from people that have. Made up my mind I'll never do it, something about shot falling all around me makes me kind of skeery!

AH, The joy's of hunting on Gov land! I went rabbit hunting once at Marais Temps Clair in St. Charles Co, and when I pulled into the parking lot and started getting the dogs out, 4 cars of Bozo's started piling out grabbing guns etc. They said they were waiting for somebody with dogs to show up and TOLD me where to turn loose the hounds, after they had surrounded a sunflower patch. They were really pissed when I just put the hounds back in the truck and moved to another spot. There were at least a dozen of them, and I like my dogs too much to have them get shot!

Same way Bob. I'm very particular who I let hunt around my dogs. I have a rule that no one shoots at the rabbit unless the dogs jump it and it makes at least one circle. That protects the dogs, the hunters, and the sport.
I've had bow hunters give me grief when running conservation ground. I don't turn my dogs loose around any parking lots that I know folks are probably bow hunting. I never run my dogs on those areas before 9 am so as not to bother guys running late.
I'm a lot more accommodating to bow hunters than they are to me. I've even had a couple threaten me lol. Thing is I'm carrying a gun and they a bow. Doesn't take a genius to figure who'll not be harmed lol

Went to the river yesterday and fished for a few hours. It was cloudy and a nice breeze but still ended up sunburned. Water level is WAY down, about as low as I've seen it. Ferry wasn't running due to the low level. Fishing was slow at best, caught a couple but ended up releasing them.

If I was more gun-ho I would be walking the creeks right now with a net to see what is in some of these holes. When I was a kid, we seined scads of fish and took them home to stock ponds. I don't know how legal that was but it was Kansas in 1974.

Amazing how fast it dried up after those big rains couple of weeks or so ago. That low water put a damper on my fishing this year.
Calling for hot and windy the next few days. That'll really dry out the corn. Talked to a couple fellas that are going to make a few passes around their fields to test corn moisture.

We are in true late summer now. Grass is burnt and garden is hot and weeds are out of control. Half our corn is combined. Time for me to go out and pick up cobs. I use corn cobs for all kinds of stuff. I gave Ray a sack of corn cobs and I thought he was gonna cry.

Corn was coming out here until the rain yesterday. We got a couple of tenths, not enough to help much other than the grass. Nice and cool this morning with some thick fog.

Got the beagles in the field an d that little moisture has sure helped the scent conditions. Dogs are hammering the rabbit this morning. Beggers lice is terrible this year. Dogs are covered in it.
