I was at an offhand shooting event and a couple of old timers were saying they could shoot better if they had the body strength they used to have. I realized how right they were. I used to throw things around that I can hardly lift now. If I was stronger then I would be a better archer and marksman and trapper. My wrists are arthritic and lifting weights and push ups are painful. I overcome the wrist problem with push ups by making a fist. Sit ups make my acid reflux act up. Running kills my knees and back. I look at my Dad who hasnt worked out since the Army and he gets his stuff done. He just has a certain way he has to go about it. I guess it is a matter of resigning ones self to the way things are or pushing yourself to exercise more. It could be quite an enhancement or it could put you in the hospital. I use 2 wheel dollies and tractor bucket for things I used to pick up and run with. I can walk and walking solves a lot of aches and pains from sitting around. I feel sorry for people that can't walk as I think it solves a lot of problems. Robert W. says he works out in the gym during the off season. Yeah, I could quit drinking and smoking to help things but that hasnt gone well in the past. Even my doctor said that I would go nuts without my tobacco and that a couple of drinks are actually healthy. (Dr screwed up my not specifying size of drink) My buddy retired from the Union and decided he must stay in shape. He did 50 push ups and 50 sit ups everyday and then he has a heart attack. I guess I am at a crossroads of letting things go the way they are or fighting it with a program which may hurt or help. I grow weary of people telling me that I am just getting old. I think such complacency is detrimental. Whats everyone else doing?

I stay busy. Hunt, fish, and trap but not to the extent I used to. While working for a living, I'd try to cram as much as I could of those 3 things in my off time. Now I just do it as I want lol.
I haven't ran my beagles as much as in past summers but they're getting older too. I'll be 72 this year and my two beagles will be 6 and 7.

Those old timers were right about more body strength making you a better shot and archer. Especially upper body strength. When I worked at the prison I worked out at the gym 3-4 days a week. I considered it as part of the job. Felt better and ate cleaner. When I retired, I cut back and eventually quit all together. Big mistake. On my last check-up with the doctor I'd lost 20 lbs, don't know how. I still smoke but my drinking has almost stopped completely. I've found that stuff I used to do easily is difficult now. Need to get back to working out but it's tough to get motivated.

Well, I'm down about fifty pounds so far. At 60 I think that's pretty decent.
I still lift weights at least three days a week. No, I'm not benching 300 for reps, but, you know. A pair of 10# dumbbells can be magic for older folks. I think it's even a Fountain of Youth thing. I even do some Yoga-stuff 'cuz being all stove up and stiff SUCKS.
I ride my Mountain Bike generally five days a week, for 4 to 23 miles (best so far), mostly over these 7%-15% hills of rock. I haven't crashed yet, but I know I will. But it's worth it. I still deal with unidentified pain (gout, arthritis, gout FROM arthritis?) but it's better. And my back hasn't been this good in years.
I watch folks my age and not much older that can't hardly walk. I've vowed to not be one of them.

I find that alot of my aches and pains go away when I get up and do something. Yesterday, I ripped an abdominal muscle lifting a trailer tongue. Now it hurts to cough. Nothing anybody can do for me and sit ups are going to be my medicine.

Well, I started using the Bowflex weight machine that my son brought with him when he moved back in. Going slow and easy since this morning is the first day in a long time. Felt good to be back on the weights. Gotta try to get to where I was a few years ago, but I know it's going to take a while. I ain't getting any younger. Not going heavy on the resistance yet but determined to get there. Going to try cleaning up my diet too. I guess the Little Debbie brownies have to stop, lol. More protein and salads instead.

Gotta see Dr. bone popper tomorrow. Pinched nerve in lower back and I've been dealing with it for 2 weeks now.
Last time was 3 or 4 years ago pulling a sled load of beaver and twisted my back.My old Dr. passed away so this will be my first time with this fella.
I was told years ago that I should have my back operated on due to compressed and bulging disc but the Dr. said to hold off as long as I could. Well that's be 30 plus years ago and I still haven't done it nor plan to. Working heavy construction most my life, you just learn to deal with the pain.

Next I need to dig out the treadmill I bought for the wife a while back. Cardio (like disco) sucks but it does help with overall health.

I injured my back when I was in my 20's helping move an AC unit to my mother-in-laws 2nd floor apartment. Been troublesome ever since. The wife has a couple of compressed discs in her back. She is to the point that it hurts constantly. Meds don't help anymore. When your back hurts, it's hard to do most anything.

Trouble with being young is your 10 tall and bullet proof lol
Think back to the many stupid stunts I pulled who's tolls are now showing up on my body.
As I got older I started gearing myself to work smarter than work harder. Got as much or more accomplished by doing so without the extra wear and tear on my body.

All those times you hurt yourself over the years, they all come back to haunt you...
Guys, I was a fairly serious body builder for years. Then I got Carpal Tunnel and my lawyer advised me to quit lifting 'cuz Work Comp would use it against me. My mindset was never quite the same.
I was doing fairly well until my stroke in 2010. Talk about a MINDSET issue... THEN I tore my ankle up in '14, and it all went to hell. A missed diagnosis, three casts and a hugely botched surgery, then being dropped like a scalding hot rock by Work Comp (yes, they do that) and I was shot, mentally. Everything hurt, all the time. Some of it may be caused by my medication, and I recently changed it, so we'll see.
Anyway, I got up to almost 260 pounds. At 5' 7" that was disgusting. Exercise (cardio) was impossible. I couldn't walk. I still cut cords and cords of wood, with lots of breaks, but the concrete floor in the restaurant KILLS me. Then I tried the Mountain Bike, and lo and behold, it doesn't hurt my ankle one bit. I could get on it when I first started with my back hurting like hell, and no issues. It's also a mind game, but this whole THING is a mind game.
I rode almost six miles this morning. Yeah, it's hot, but no matter. I stay heavy in the water, drinking a lot of it. It's working ya'll.
Diets don't work, at least not permanent. It's all about willpower and the ability to suffer a little for real gains. And for the weight stuff? Since we're all older here now (sigh) remember that its all about CORE. Getting the MIDDLE strong. The rest follows.
I even changed my original YouTube channel to a kind of fitness deal (hahaharhar, I know) but I did it to self-motivate. Purely selfish.
Oh well. It's only 97 degrees out, so I just hooked the bass boat up (talk about SWEATING) and my wife and I are off to Truman for some sightseeing and some rock hunting (no fishin'!). I wouldn't have attempted this even a few months ago in these conditions. Things are better, and Lord willing, they'll continue that way. Good luck to anyone who takes it upon themselves to try to get BETTER.

My chiropractor is retired. He did me more good than my MD. I found a new chiropractor, but he charges twice as much and aint as good. The wife sees to it that we eat healthy. We raise some of our own food and she buys organic when she can. Neither one of us eat a lot. Top of the fridge is covered with vitamins and supplements. I tried doing exercises on the floor like push ups and sit ups but just felt silly.

I've never been to a chiropractor. I hear good and bad things. Some people swear by them, others swear at them. Thought about going to one a couple of times, but how do you choose which one?

Just like any doctor there are good ones or bad ones. Some just like to string you along or get you to buy into a "miracle" treatment.
A few years back ,while working, my back was really giving me fits. Saw an ad about spinal decompression and it's benefits. Fairly expensive and lengthy process. Went thru with it and did no good. Finally had to do a couple shots in the back using x-ray, immediate relieve but it's with steroids.
My old Dr. (the one that died) didn't mess around and gave a good body adjustment that usually did the trick as a one time deal.
I'm going to try this new guy today and if it doesn't do good in a couple days I'll fire him. lol

I went to one three times. He said I was mostly fine, just needed "tuned up". He got me back to pop one time. After I lost the first 20-25 pounds my back is WAY better.
With my bad ankle, I walk stupid. Walking stupid makes my back hurt. I just live with it, and try to keep shedding pounds.

Chiropractors are miracle workers and MDs hate them. Biggest problem with chiropractors is they romp on you like a side of beef without knowing your medical condition. A lot of your medical problems are from skeltal /muscular issues and thats where you need a back cracker. I used to have a dealer in Raleigh, NC that was an orthopedic guy and made leg braces and corrective foot wear. One of the guys I worked with had bad knees. The two of them had a long phone conversation and exchanged pictures. The guy in NC told John to buy a cheap pair of work boots with thick soles. Then he sent us a blueprint of where to remove the material off the soles. We took a grinder and ground down the soles to the print. The guy in NC said "Congratulations, now you have a $2000 pair of corrective shoes". Right now my side is killing me from lifting too much weight. (trailer tongue) I just had a $9000 CT scan done that revealed my body has no issues with any internal organs. My side hurt before, during and after the CT scan. So here I sit with a nagging pain in my abdominal muscles and a $2300 hospital bill for my deductible. Nobody can do anything for me it just has to mend. Sit ups make it feel better.
