The workout routine is going pretty good. I'm sore from using muscles I haven't worked in a long time, but that's to be expected. That Bowflex is a nice machine but it's tough to work on your core. It's hard for me to do sit-ups or crunches because it really messes with my back. Thought about joining a gym in town but I'm afraid I wouldn't go. Too easy to find an excuse to put it off. They do have some nice equipment though. I think the next time I talk to my doctor I'll ask him about the local chiropractors. Just to see what he thinks about the local people.

As a rule, MD's won't talk about Chiro's at all. The AMA won't allow Chiro's to join them because of their theories regarding curing many diseases with acupuncture and bone cracking.

Wasn't too impressed with this new guy as I didn't think he was aggressive enough but did get relief.
I'm a little sore today but that comes from putting off doing anything about it for a couple weeks. He had a machine that used rollers and vibration to loosen up the muscles first that wasn't too bad.
He doesn't take insurance which is a pain. Have to submit the claims myself. My insurance will pay for 25 visits and any gym fees.

Core work can be deadlifts with light weight. Just bending over and picking up something (carefully and properly) works all kinds of muscles, especially the lower back and the abs. Remember when you had those?
A pair of ten pound dumbbells can be magic and can be used in deadlifts or squats. If they're too light you just lift them slower. Proper form is critical, but a quick check online can show you the important stuff.
All the Bowflex workouts are great for the extremities, but without core you'll be dead in the water eventually.
I also do squats, without any additional weight, almost daily. I started as a stretch exercise before my rides, but with some Yoga study I realized the benefits of them all the time. You don't nor will you be able to take your butt to the floor. No need to. Things will pop and crunch. Go EASY at first. Partials are better than nothing. AND, it won't take many. As soon as I can in the morning, sometimes immediately out of bed, I'll do four or five fairly deep and slooowwww squats. Then five or ten more before I do any work or ride the bike. It's amazing what a properly done set of these can do for me, and how much better I feel. For real.
I'm really diggin' all of this. I only wish I had discovered the Mountain Bike ten years earlier. I think I'd of had a much better life.

I have a mountain bike. My brother gave it to my son who could care less now. I used it to get to my tree stand a couple years ago. It brought back some memories from my childhood. Without fenders, they sling mud all over everything. With fenders, they plug up with mud. Deer come unglued when they see a bike moving through the woods. Horses are the same way and bikes are forbidden on trail rides. It freaks them out to see a human body moving silently. A gas powered ATV and they just stand there. I have a little BMX bike that I throw on when we use public campgrounds. I use it to run back and forth to the showerhouse. A friend of mine has a fat boy bike. Big ballon tires. I thought they peddled harder ever though the big tires are smoother on rough terrain. Used to be an old man with a long beard that hunted the public land near me. He bolted 4 buckets to his bike and piled his gear on and disappeared for a couple days until he got a deer. MDOC doesnt approve of that but they never knew he was there. I got out my old 1970 Sears Spider bike. It needed new tires and tubes. The price I paid for them was equal to what a new bike cost.

Deer HATE my bike. They run way early when I come down the road. That's probably a GOOD thing. A deer/bike collision would not end well.

I dont know if its the clicking sound or the fact that you are just floating along but they dont like it. If you come up behind a horse on a bycycle then it is rodeo time. I can ride right up on a deer on my horse. The horse starts nickering long before I see the deer. That old man on the corp ground was overnight camping (somewhere). Understand our corp ground is 100% neglected to the point that you cant even park in the parking lot. I wrote a letter to the MDC that I dont appreciate people parking on my property because their parking lot is a joke. Their reply was they leave the parking lot in disrepair so the party crowd doesnt hang out there. 3000 acres of land on Truman lake and no where to park. I got out my bike out. I remember the seat kept falling off. Last night there was a brand new seat on it. I am losing it because I dont recall doing that. I aired the tires up and will check tonight to see if they are still up. I hate patching inner tubes because I stand a 50/50 chance of pinching it going back in. It has a tool bag and a tire pump. I think it would be fun to ride in fair weather but not mud. Meanwhile I am doing my push ups and sit ups in my office during slack times. I close the door so people dont freak out seeing me laying on the floor.

Fair weather biking. I reckon that's better then no biking at all!
And 3000 acres?!? Need to re-do your math brother.

All the talk about bike riding got me thinking about trying it myself. I don't have a mountain bike, but do have a pretty nice 10 speed that I bought years ago when I worked at the pawn shop. Tires are kinda skinny, so getting down the driveway would be a challenge. My drive is really ROUGH, Anyone in a regular passenger car won't make it without ripping the underside out. We rarely get company, family knows to drive their truck here.

Started trying some squats for core workout this morning. No weight, just the motion. Tried to concentrate on form. Only did three sets of ten but I could feel it working. The soreness from the bowflex is about gone so I bumped up to four set of ten on it.

Take it easy 'sarge. But those squats WORK. Hey guys, not to get too technical, but the bike can be a tricky thing in regards to FIT. I say this because if it doesn't fit you then you won't use it. Saddle height and set back/front, bar height, etc. I still struggle with this newer bike and it's over a year old. Of course, I'M changing too so it's an ongoing process. I swear, if you're more comfortable you'll do better.

It is Corp ground and then the MDC owns a little piece of it where the parking lot was. Its the Gallinipper area and it runs for miles to Truman lake. When the lake is up then it backs up to my land.

I'm not trying to go real heavy with the resistance on the B-F machine. And I rest a couple of minutes between sets. Used to spend 2-3 hours at the gym when I was younger. Now I'm done in 20-30 minutes. Of course there were distractions at the gym (female hardbodies) I can concentrate better at home on form, and NO MIRRORS.

Our farm is on the national bike trail. We always called it the Bicentennial Trail because thats what it originally was in 1976. Theres a path that goes coast to coast and our road is on the itinerary. All summer long, bikes pass the house. Our well out front has a hand pump and theres people that stop by and use it. I saw a picture of it on the internet where the bikers talk about where it is and that it's drinkable water. We don't care if they want water. I talk to them and they are way to serious about covering long distances. They travel light with backpacking gear. We used to peddle 15 miles to the State Lake and camp there. We had our bikes all rigged up with racks and fishing pole holders and baskets. Had a blast at 15 years old. Used to go everywhere on bicycles. I got a 125 yamaha and didnt look back for years. I went out this morning and one of my bike tires are flat so I get to break it down and patch.

Those distractions! Sigh...
Truman Lake total area is over 160,000 acres, of which the lake is about 56000 at normal pool (which it rarely is). The MDC is in charge of about 55000 of those acres. A lot. Anyway, it's a big place.
I've been to your property Mike. In '93 I fished up Gallinipper as far as the boat would float. That was a very long day, getting stuck in a logjam and maneuvering thru forests of brush and trees.
Just got back from a nine mile ride. What a dandy day- I should've went twelve.

I'm the guy worried about exercise and I just come in from mixing and pouring concrete under the porch. Not hot but bad humidity.
The land around the Gallinipper took a dramatic change about 15 years ago. A fire burned for for a week. Consumed all the giant maples and cottonwoods and left big craters from the stumps burning. It was a shocker to stand at my gate and see the railroad tracks a mile east. Didnt last long and now it is grown up worse than ever. I used to be able to get a truck back all the way to the lake but not now.And yes I know thats a no-no.

Keeping this going. It's another hot one, and I'm fixin' to go ride my bike...
Sarge (and whomever). On those squats- I was talking about this with a customer, and trying to show the way I do it with little impact. They did okay (it was amusing 'cuz we were right there in the restaurant, working out) BUT, and I've seen this many times... At the top of the stroke, when you stand up straight and tall, be sure and throw your shoulders back and stetttcchhhh the lower back. Lock out for a couple of seconds. So critical for good core work.
Bye.

The weather is too hot for me to do much outside, although there's tons that needs to be done. Found a couple of ab exercises on the Bowflex. I'm working out every other day. Back, shoulders, chest, abs and squats with no weight yet. Three sets of ten on each. Might go into town and get some 10-15 pound weights tomorrow. for the squats. Still a little sore after working out but it's a good sore. It's gone in a couple of hours. I should have started this years ago.

Like I said earlier, I exercise in my office. Whenever I get sore and stiff in the saddle, I do something to make the pain go away instead of popping pills. (pills is easier to spell than ibuprofen ) I use motors for dumb bells. I shut the door so people dont think I am crazy(er). At home I sit in the AC and look outside. I force myself to get out there and once I get going I cant stop. I do believe in use it or lose it. The archery thing is going well. Its a little cardio with shooting and then retrieving arrows. I shoot off the deck so I am running up and down steps. Its more physical than you think because after a dozen arrows you are breathing hard. The mountain bike thing is on hold. I aired up the tires and it just set there. If I get the urge to go somewhere then I hop on the ATV. Shame shame. Once this weather breaks I am sure I will go to bed wore out from exercise. I had a gym instructor say that regular work doesnt count and you have to work out in a gym. I am calling BS on that and am sure he was just pushing memberships. My Dad hasnt been to a gym since the Army and he is 86 and can work me under the table. He just doesnt sit around when there is work to be done and his mind is going all the time.
