Not a very fair comparison John. The number of trappers responding to the petition very much seems to be on par with the percentage of trappers (compared to previous years) that are participating in this forum. The first fur sale has been cancelled due to lack of interest. Go figure. Betcha there's nowhere NEAR 9000 permits sold this year. D.W. Verts- Bigfoot Trapper Dale I'd say most trappers opted to sell early due to falling prices rather than wait and take a chance of getting less for their furs. Almost every trapper I've talked to that have trapped for more than a few years haven't supported the idea of extending the season till the 28th. About 1/3 have been ok with extending it until the 15th .

Why not poll the purchaser when they buy the trapping permit. Ask about longer season etc. They ask you how many duck, doves, and geese you harvested last year when you purchase a migratory bird permit .

My view was too much emotion was displayed instead of solid facts for a vote to take place on a menu such as extending the season.....evidently from the brochure that was available the Commission had sent out a survey seeing how the general trapping public viewed the proposed changes....I don't know how many completed and returned the survey but hope the commission takes those votes/info into consideration as well as the MTA general meeting concenus.
The MDC was considering to extend till Feb 20 and our body was stuck on the 28th. I would have relished and additional 20days to harvest cats that would be the best of the year....It was rumored the commission wanted to start Bobcat season Dec first, any other info on this.

Talked to a local furbuyer a few minutes ago. He believes the harvest is off by 60% or more from last year Says he has bought about a 1/3 of what he bought last year.

Cletis,Jeff said the percentage replying to the survey was about 5%.
I sure enforcement issues would make the 20th a better closing date as far as the MDC is concerned IMHO.
I too think a poll at time of permit purchase would give a better picture of what the majority of trappers want. This way they would have to respond.

Feb 20th is the end of otter and muskrat season. The only season left is beaver and darn few people are going to mess with them. That means less folks out there making it easier for the agents to do their jobs.

I agree with that premise. Streamlining seasons makes sense, but it also makes sense when asking the MDC to work with us. They like "easy".
I'd still like, just one time, to catch some March 1st 'cats. Oh my.

Only way that a survey can be valid is if they send it to all trappers, otherwise is slanted by which group gets more or less surveys sent and which part of the state gets more of group surveyed. And there is "I will say I'm happy with what we have" for fear that a change will mean less factor. Since MTA annual meeting voters represent such a small percentage of the state wide trappers their input should be taken lightly. Where can 1-3% rule?

I must be typing in invisible ink or something, what's the difference in 8 days I asked, oh well...
Why don't they just make it simple and end all seasons at the end of February. That way there is no accidental catches when beaver trapping.

Ozarkmountainman, A march 1st Cat can be caught almost anywhere south of Missouri. Alabama and Mississippi both just extended there seasons, not a problem in Louisiana, year round season in Texas.

Dale, The bobcat market is in the crapper. If you want to go out of state let me know, I'll hook you up with a paid gig. You deserve it, you've done more for trappers than the entire MTA.

Yes I have Robert... Happy?
Since we are opening a "cat house" of our own, I'm afraid my trappin' time will be hurt the next couple of years. I would LOVE to take advantage of a money-makin' trip, but not for a while. Thanks though- I know that offer is genuine.
I did inform Candi that Good Lord willin' and the creeks don't rise, I WILL head west for an extended engagement in a couple years. Planning is just now getting underway.
I still get a day with you somewhere, right?
