No....the mountain lions were an example of the MDOC lying like a dog. Another good example is the slot limit on Blue cat. Only a booger eating moron would believe that the white (blue) cat was in danger with the 550 tributaries to truman and LOZ. A more intelligant fellow would follow the $ and see they were heavily greased by special interest people with $ (Tourney fisherman and skiers). Ask Linda what a foul pile of deciet that was....

Overall the MDOC is all right. I just remember they are a government agency and subject to certain things that is increasingly becoming more common with government.

When the MDC was created, one of the things they did to keep politics to a minimum was make the rule that no more than 2 members of the Conservation Commission could belong to the same political party. This was a very wise decission indeed. As with any group, organization, and such, there is always cliques and special interest groups. No way around it,it's just human nature. I still beleive that the MDC's first and foremost interest is the welfare of our wildlife and natural resourses.

The lion Cubs are all dead from being snake bitten by the rattlesnakes the black helicopters dropped in the woods to keep the hunters out.

MDC gets blamed for that stuff, but I still think it's a conspiracy from the Illuminati and the Obama Administration! LOL!! It's a Conspiracy I tell ya, a Conspiracy!!!! LOL!!!!

I still haven't got to see a Mountain Lion but have been pretty close several times. Their screams are unmistakeable and will send the bravest dogs under the porch. Bears are getting really thick, too thick, in my neck of the woods. Idk if big cats breed here or not but have saw different size tracks on the same sand bar.

There was more believable talk about cougar in the Ozarks thirty-plus years ago when this area was a little more wild.
Nobody here spends more time in the fields, woods and creek bottoms of MO than I do. I live on the edge of MILES of rugged country. Bear? You betcha. They come and go. Mostly just make a nuisance of themselves, and maybe scarin' the bejeezus out of you when they're in your garbage pile in the middle of the night (okay, I wasn't really scared, but you try not to jump when a Kenworth takes off thru the woods in the dark). They leave piles of nasty & smelly scat. No doubt.
But lions? Oh, they're here all right. A lot of them? I doubt it. Again, I live in the woods. Never seen one. One-time there was a week-old POSSIBLE partial track in Johnson County in a frozen pond bank near a suspicious calf-kill. Maybe. But everybody has seen a 'cat except me. Everyone.
Now, can we please take my thread back to a plausible, well-discussed discussion on fur-season lengths, and more specifically pertaining to mountain li..., er, bobcat and the otter/mink/muskrat/beaver fiasco we now deal with?
Please?

People dont read well. I brought the cougars up as an example of the MDOC not giving the straight poop. Its a volatile subject and ,if they broadcast the lions, then folks would be packing guns and shooting at their own shadow. Ive seen two and had people with me both times. Dale-Have you ever considered glasses? they work pretty good.

So nobody has given a good reason to end season at the end of January. To me thats like saying you have to quit deer hunting at 3 pm.....It was just getting good.

I guess I understand the early start for you northerners, but I sure do start to catch a lot of pretty cats right at seasons end. And of course ending otter season while beaver is still open is just stupid. Just means more untagged otter.

I've been told that trappers asked to have the season shortened and I believe (some) trappers are that stupid.
Far as I can tell none of our furbearers are endangered. A longer season on both ends would not change that. Having cougars and bears does not change that. Having catfish in Truman sucks because having Truman sucks, that was once a nice watershed.
General furbearer season could run from Nov. 1 thru Mar. 15 and I'd be happy. (Nov. 10 thru Feb. 28 would be OK.)
Deer season, rabbit season, crow season, lion season, catfish season and so on have no bearing on when to trap a possum, imo.
It should be printed on the Trapping Permit that it is not mandatory to trap just because the season is open. In BLOCK letters.

Kansas allows you to keep so many muskrat a day that are incidental in beaver traps. I thought that was a pretty decent consideration.

Another reason to extend the season is not every day between nov 20 and jan 31 is trappable. How many years have we had two or three weeks of zero temp and ice and snow. A few predator sets and a few under ice sets but still down time.

The reg trapping season should run till the end of FEB. The extended beaver season is fine but it needs to include rats and otters since there is a chance of catching them in your beaver sets. IMO
