Got in some Duke 650's at work. Looks to be a well made trap. Thick cast off set jaws, large pan, 4 coiled and a base plate. Kind of like they took the #4 and modified it to include improvements. Might have try a few, should make a good beaver trap.

The price tag usually makes my mind up.

I'm hearing now that Duke is working on a dogless version of this trap. Afraid I'll have to try it if it comes out.

I dont see how trap companies are surviving these days.

Good question. There's not the market that there used to be. Supply houses don't have the selection of trap parts like before either.

Old traps dont last forever and they rust and get lost.

Toughest thing for me is my bigger size longsprings. A lot of them need new springs and they're hard to find. Tried inserting a pipe and hammering them to more of a U-shape. Similar to the springs on the old Blake & Lamb. Results were so-so.

Gunsmoke is a whiz at reworking traps. Problem is he dont get on here anymore. Surely a guy can fix an old long spring unless its too rusted.

Old traps dont last forever and they rust and get lost. Not to mention stolen!

Years ago, when I sold fur at blackpowder shoots, I asked about an interest in hand made beaver traps. They said nobody is going to pay for what I got in making a handforged beaver trap. Most guys just hang a big modern longspring in their camp and that makes them a beaver trapper. Most people wopuldnt know the difference.

Used to be a local BP club here. They had a rondy every year at the state park. I joined, They had their own range and it was a real relaxing place. Had the park type BBQ grills there. I used to go and spend the whole day, cook up some burgers and shoot my replica Hawken. Nobody had much interest in fur or old traps though.

We got a good club. Statistically some of our members are the best in the State (Missouri Offhand Shooters) You can show up authentic or wear neon sneakers. Got a primitive campground and a modern. Our biggest problem is vocations. No young people joining. Old timers dying off. My problem is it is an hour away. Glad when we go. Kinda kick myself for no going to the big rondy at Daniel Boones house over by St Louis. Theme was Hawken and they had gunbuilders from all over the country as well as Hawken descendants. Had one event where you could get in line to shoot an original Hawken.

Not sure if the local club is still active. There wasn't a lot of mountain man type theme to them. They had a shooting match at the rondy made up of several different age groups and categories. Also, an archery shoot (long bows only). It was strict as to everyone being in period dress and campsites. Very few traps on display and the ones that were came from the local hardware store. Shiney and new. Faux-fur hats for sale everywhere. One guy always set up a blacksmith shop and made mostly tools and camp gear. I asked a couple of times about making traps, but he wasn't interested. They haven't had a rondy in several years now. I believe the range was shut down. Shame too, not a lot of young people interested so it died off.

Insurance takes some money. We run the Boy Scouts through. A few have a lot of questions. Big thing that ruined black powder was alternative season. A lot of guys chalked range time up to deer season. Now they all got scope mounted pistols. Gun shops cant get rid of black powder either. Fine with me. I got a gun that shoots match heads and sinkers.

When I worked the pawn shop we had sidelock BP gun I couldn't give away. At one point I did a deal where if you bought any gun you got a BP rifle free. People wouldn't take them.

You let me know if you have any flintlocks nobody wants. Those side hammer percussion are what are glutting the market. I know old men that sink a thousand bucks in parts and make a historically accurate rifle or musket and won't sell them. Thats what happened to Ray. He is an apprentice at a gun shop building long rifles with a 6 month waiting time. Its a lot of fun to get out the coal burners and plink away at targets. I have several reproduction side hammers that would be perfect starter guns for kids but they all want ARs. We failed to teach them about Daniel and Davey.

Back in the days when we had a BP season, a friend bought a new in-line. He was talking about how great it was, and said I needed go get one. I had a percussion Hawken replica. I told him if I buy another smoke pole, I'll be going backwards. He didn't understand what I meant, I told him a flintlock. I got that deer in the headlights look.

The last I knew, (haven't been in there in a couple of years) the pawn shop quit taking in BP rifles. It was due to the situation I described. With the "alternative" deer season people are looking for AR "pistols." It was so much easier and simple when it was muzzleloader only.

Old timers preferred flintlocks. They didnt want to depend on a box of caps for survival. These $100 caplocks they mass produce today have horrible ignition. My great great had one rifle his whole life and killed daily with it. It was a Kentucky flintlock in 42 caliber. I would love to know who in the family made off with it.

The rifles at the pawn shop were either sidelock percussion or in-lines. All of them were so dirty/rusted you couldn't see the rifling. I cleaned up two that were not as bad and gave one to each of my son's. Both shoot nice. Never owned a flintlock, but they look like a fun piece to shoot.
