Golden rule with blackpowder is clean clean clean. Them old timers never had dirty guns. Anytime they had a spare moment they would run a swab down their barrels. I use Triple 7 a lot. I has the foot pounds but little residue. Despise pyrodex and use it for cannon fodder.
Is it Iowa that requires shotgun or muzzleloader for deer? Some prefer a 150 yard inline as opposed to a 100 yard shotgun. I think PA is roundball only.

Last few years I haven't hunted BP. Had no tags left. One county I hunt in doesn't allow antlerless tags and the other allows one. Need to find another a third county to hunt in that allows the doe tags. Would be nice to get a managed hunt with BP, but haven't been drawn in almost 10 years.
