Ok so I tried making some and I'm not sure whats going on. I chopped up some tails in small chunks, enough to fill a gallon jar loosely. I drilled a hole in the lid and soldered a copper tube through the hole to act as a vent. I screwed the lid on and bent the tube over into a small bucket of water, so gas could escape and fly's couldn't lay eggs. The first couple days everything seemed ok but the vacuum created by the heating and cooling of the jar pulled most of the water from the bucket filling the jar with water. This has been going on now since early spring. The jar has some rotted chunks of tail and clear liquid, I assume is water, and the bucket is now overflowing with a reddish brown semi-thick sludge. My thought was that the oil formed inside the jar but I'm thinking now something went wrong. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated as this is my first attempt at making any type of lure. If this works I have some dried castors and oil sacks I'd like to do something with.

Two things come to mind. First you only fill the jar 2/3s full of cut up tails. Second, you only want enough water in the bucket to keep the pipe submerged. Not enough to completely fill the pipe so it can continue to filling the jar.
I fill my jar 2/3 full and put lid on loosely. Next I put the jar in a 5 gal plastic bucket with a tight fitting lid. If you paint the bucket black,it'll absorb more heat. Every couple of weeks you might check the jar lid to insure it didn't seal ,causing pressure to build. Pretty simple really.
Soak the castor in enough vodka to cover so it rehydrates and grind. Mix ground castor with glycerine and use.

Thanks Big John, I figured I messed up somewhere but at least I don't have an exploded glass jar full of goo in my yard I guess. I'll have to try again I think I still have a tail or two that can go in the jar for a second round. I'll try the castor mix you talk of as well. Thanks again.

I think the copper tube became a siphon. Step one....load the jar Step two.......zing a screw in the lid step three.....set in sunlight for a long time
After all this screwing around with hoses and screens, I found the drywall screw lets pressure out and leaves no room for a fly to blow eggs from it abdomen into the mix. If in doubt then put the jar inside a gallon jar with the lid half screwed on. Flys blow eggs.....

That is dark oil! Mine was the color of honey.......That black will settle out if you don't shake it..You can also tie that tube in a knot and fill the knot with water. Works just like a P-trap on a drain under your sink. Another way to go is to get a fermentation lock at a winemaking store.(they cost like two bucks and fit a gallon jug) Whatever you do, you can tell if it works by looking for maggots. If your batch has maggots in it then the little devils out foxed you.

The black oil is what you want. Carefully suck it off with a turkey baster and don't get the lighter stuff under it. I usually extract the black oil leaving about a 1/4 inch of it still on top,to avoid getting the brown/grey stuff.

Thanks. Is it applied in a dirt hole I'm assuming?

Used in a dirt hole but not limited to only a dirt hole. Some rendered oils make a lure by itself and some oils are a base for a lure to which other scents are added. My picture was fish oil.

Thanks for the info but now I have more questions! How do you add scent to it? Meaning how do you get a scent strong enough to compete with the oil? I assume the oil doesn't smell like roses.

How long does it take to be ready to use and how much do you use at a set?

The hotter the quicker it will start producing the black oil. I usually put the jar in a 5 gal. bucket that I've painted black. That way it gets hotter quicker. I place it in full sunlight also.
Usually 5 to 10 drops is enough on a cotton ball or sheeps wool Paul. If you have a dog,try putting some on a cotton ball and place under a rock. Betcha he digs it up lol.

If you started a batch today, it might be ready for season. I don't think beaver tail oil is a lure by itself. It is just a base. Homemade Fish oil (with the sludge) is practically a complete lure.. You go over to the bait and lure maker website and they wont tell you any thing. Them old timers were stingy with their secrets. We are not that way on this site. I think Willy Mallard posted this years ago and Cletis resurrected it a couple years ago but here we go again.

Holy crap, now that's a reply!!! Thanks for going above and beyond on that one! This site has been helpful to me and I greatly appreciate it! Do you guys make all your own lures or just a few? Is it cheaper or equal out in the end? Thinking I may try this next year. Of all the ones you named, which one works the best for you?

There are no hard fast answers. What one man claims is good then another says its bad. Kinda like fishing lures. I hate using purple worms but somebody else will say that's all they use.
