Heck of a list Krank. I'm re-doing my beaver tail oil but only have 1 tail to use. Yesterday I ground up 2 quarts of beaver meat to use in a bait mix, 1 quart is aging for 3 days before I add the sodium benzoate the other is already preserved. I'm just waiting on the oils I plan on adding before I can finish the mix.

Beava meats an old standby.....Slow that taint down. I think people taint too much and expect magic out of SB. I dunno where the tail oil fits in on a lure of tainted meat. They are separate lures......Got any dried castor?

Do not confuse tainting meat with making oil. Two different things entirely. Making oil is a complete decay and tainting meat is just adding a little smell to it.

I've got 3 sets of dried casters, 2 oil sacks, a quart of fresh beaver meat and about 3 pints of meat that I'm letting taint for later in the season. I'm ordering some oils to mix with the meat once its reached a good taint. My first round of tail oil was a flop, there are still some tail pieces in the jar that I'm going to add with the new pieces the next round. I wont fill my jar as full this time either. Once the meat taints I'll add sodium benzoate and then try different oils for variety and experimentation. I'm keeping track of what I'm doing so I can do it again later if I find something that works well.

do you put water or anything in with the beaver tail when you first start out ?

No, just chop up the tails into chunks and fill a jar loosely about 2/3 full and let it sit. You have to vent the jar or it will explode from gas build up. That's where the problem of flies comes in but there's ways around them to.

Once the taint starts then its too late for SB as it takes several days to kick in.

I only let it sit for a day in a cool shed then put the SB in. Its still in the shed nice and cool getting stirred daily. My oils from F&T should be here by this weekend. All i need now is an old food processor to blend it all together.

I've got my food processor, my oils, and my preserved beaver meat. I should be able to make about 5 pints of bait. I'll let ya know how it turns out, but if it works good I may not tell ya whats in it. Hahaha. I plan on putting some in holes with a camera on them to maybe see the reaction and response from the local predators. Probably be a great grinner bait.

I checked on my tail oil the other day. I dumped all the liquid into a gallon glass jar, it was in a white bucket, and let it settle. Today there is a half inch of black oil that has risen to the top. I'm going to spoon this into a small squirt bottle and use it at dirt hole sets on the backing. There are still a few pieces of tail in the other jar that I started using that will continue to rot down and I will add more tails as I get them so this should keep on producing oil as long as it doesn't freeze. I'll keep ya informed on how the oil works as an attractant.

WCS has it for sale on their website . Also a nice natural shellfish oil not a chemical one .

Some of those formulas don't pan out in my mind a oz of toquin holy crap that must be some very weak stuff I have always heard good tonquin goes in by the drops. A oz of good tonquin could still be detected in a gallon of gas! Now some of the tonquin you get these days a guy could get away with using a oz,but the old time stuff no way

those chunks will keep producing oil for years I have batches three years old and still put out oil every year! I have no idea how long they will produce oil . I make around half a gallon a year and when they start to fall off on producing I use the left over chunks in d-holes or grind with other meats. Fresh preserved deer meat and tail chunks work great, ground into a paste bait no other additives needed maybe a few drops of pure quill! I prefer a loud bait

Instead of the bent pipe, you might try drilling a hole in the jar lid and cementing a fish tank air stone on it. Just make sure they're enough clearance for expansion so the goop won't plug the stone.

I used to use hose and airstone and all kinds of inventions. Anymore I just zing a sheet metal screw in the lid. Purpose is to let pressure out and not let flies in. Be advised the a fly can blow eggs through a tiny tiny hole. To clinch the deal I have put small jars with a loose lid inside of a gallon jar with a loose lid. That picture of the gallon jar of carp sitting on the roof of the horse trailer is still on the roof of the horse trailer. Has a very interesting odor and that's what you want. Interesting.
