I have a trapper from out of state coming in for two weeks and he asked about Missouri's open carry laws. Can he have a .22 pistol in his truck on his trap line, if it is in plain view?
Also, since the MO non-resident trapping permit is also a small game hunting permit, he is required to have the hunter education course. However, there is nowhere local that he can take it. The law does say they accept it from any state, but his state does not have it. My GW said he could probably find a state that offers an online course he can take to get in compliance. Is anyone familiar with a state doing that?

I sell guns. So you can take my word on this. Rifles can be open pistols must be concealed. As of October if he has a valid ccw he can legally open carry anywhere. As for small game I'm not sure. But my cousin does have a small game license but he never took the hunter ed course.

Around here lots of people open carry all the time! Only a few places like walmart and the schools prefer you leave them in your vehicle. I get a huge kick out of the conceal rule. You have to take a class and pass a silly test to carry concealed but almost everybody I know keep a concealed gun in their purse, pocket or whatever. Its crazy but all about control and making money!
I open carry when I'm hunting and trapping. Concealed is something I would never do since I ain't taken the expensive class! haha!
Great questions, Kimmy! You always have a way of kicking off a great thread! Be careful around all that red fox pee!

Turk, you can conceal carry inside your vehicle and home without ccw permit. Step outside and you're in violation. I'll dig up the link if you want.

I think only if Mo recognizes the CCW permit from his state. I don't think that a non resident trapping permit is valid as a small game hunting permit too.

Thanks everyone. I did try to research this for myself before posting, so let me clarify a few things and maybe that will help.
Missouri only has a non resident hunting/trapping furbearer permit. They are one in the same, a combo permit, but he will need to show proof of the hunter ed course. I've searched online and many states offer online courses but all I am finding require to you be a resident of that state, and/or only a portion of it is given online (like MO). My GW said there will not be anywhere local this time of year that offers the final portion of the certification because of the time of year (basically nothing in season). I did not go through all 50 states, got frustrated and came here, LOL.
I did see that carrying a firearm (rifle or pistol) while actively hunting is permitted, so I didn't think that outside of the vehicle would be an issue (correct me if I'm wrong), but was more concerned about him having it in the vehicle. We can just use a rifle if it's too much trouble, but it did kind of make me curious, and he would prefer to have the pistol.
Thanks Joe, I'll check out that link.

It does not mention in that link that you can conceal carry/conceal a firearm while hunting. My two main concerns are in the vehicle, and to dispatch animals.
So, it seems that it should cover him having the pistol while running the trapline. Right? :-)

No, he needs a hunter ed from another state, not just a license. That's what I read.

OK Kim, was your friend born before January 1st, 1967? If they were they do not have to have the hunter ed card. If they were born after that they can purchase an Apprentice Hunter Authorization permit just as long as YOU have your hunter safety card and you all stay together. The non-resident furbearer license only allows the holder to trap and hunt FURBEARERS and not small game.

Once they have the Apprentice permit then they will have to purchase the Furbearer permit also, just an extra $10 I think for the Apprentice permit. Just remember that they will have to ALWAYS be with someone with a hunter safety card.

If I could remember all this at once I would have just made one post. Once they have the proper permits then however and whatever you use on your trapline will be legal for them also.
