Has anyone tried mixing cracked corn/shell corn with mackerel or even just the corn itself in their dp's? I've got some spots that have felines of the domesticated variety in close proximity and have to avoid catching them. Also what have you guys had your best luck with on freeze proofing your mack? Last year (my first year trapping) I tried mixing salt with it as well as RV Antifreeze. Didn't really notice any major difference in catches between either one and regular mack, so just getting other peoples opinions on it. There's a lot of information on here, thank you guys(and gals) for all your help!

I did try a concoction of fish food, molasses, anise, corn syrup, vanilla, peanut butter, marshmallows...etc and used oil from a turkey fryer for lure and I did catch several coons with it but if I did't have a catch that stuff got caked in something fierce. I appreciate the input Grumpy

I caught a big old boat coon last year in on of my DPs with just using corn. the guy that owns the property has a big high like running right out across a big hill in front of his house and they feed the see there corn for the grand kids to watch so I figured the coon would be comming up there to get the corn. put some down in the DP when the big pile had ran out and 2 nights later caught him

Get rid of the mechanism jamming cracked corn. Does that make sense? Creamed corn draws them in or cooked sweet corn. Grain kind of draws mice. In all fairness, we used to catch them in cubby sets on field corn. That was years before Dps. I had a cousin that put an ear of corn dipped in a lard on all his sets. Even caught coyote.

Every one is trying to come up with a new bait for the DP type trap, to make a bait for your dp it has to have three things. {1} it has to have a oil base. {2} it has to smell good {3} it has to taste good. if you have these three things you will catch every coon that comes to your dp.
take your mix and add it to some fine crack corn, mix it in to the corn and then put a lid on the corn for three days, at that time your corn will take on the taste of what you added to the corn. Now you have a supper coon bait. you can take the same oil and use as a trailing scent. put one drop every foot for fifteen feet from your trap. when the coon hits the trailing scent, he will taste it and bird dog it to your trap.

One thing about DP bait as opposed to other bait is that it has to taste good. That coon needs to keep coming back for more as opposed to sets where you are just getting them near the trap.

Just curious why you would need to put down a scent trail 15 feet from your trap.DP's are MUCH MORE productive place right at the coon trail.

If the coons are running a mud bank, I draw them off the trail to dry ground that will take a stake and not have a muddy coon. So that's why I aint right on the trail.
I dump anti freeze in by bait. Think about the good taste part....if it don't taste good then they take one bite and leave. No fishing inside the tube and tripping the trap.

Shad are free, all ya have to do is buy the castin net and drive to a lake.
Got about three gallons of them so far (couldnt tell ya how many). And they dont have salt in them to rust your traps. That is they way Im goin this year. Been slim pickings this past week with them here at lake of the ozarks. Dont know if its because of the muddy water or if the water turned over.

I love jack mac....I love shad.....I love fish oil......Used them for years. Coon dont like that stuff if it rots. I am changing my act. A fellow posted a while back that coon eat fish all the time. Good point. Coon got a sweet tooth and I am using that to get them on the board. Always used fish in pocket sets in case something else came in. Using Dps, you are only catching coon. Anymore, pancake syrup and minimarshmellow work the best. Spend $2 at the Dollar store and you are set. Store bought fish oil with anise. Vanilla on the marshmellow. I got persimmon jelly and old honey that aint fit for humans. If you use bacon grease then other varmits and dogs will root trap around. There....all my dirty little secrets.
