Does anyone know the proper way to attempt to get a season changed or added?
I would like to see an early primitive (caplock or flintlock) muzzleloader season. Something around October 1 with the length of season being 9 days.
I just feel that those of us that shoot these types of firearms should be given as fair a shake as a bowhunter using a new compound bow. The first week in October would give the bowhunters 2 weeks of pressure free hunting then 3 to 4 weeks before modern firearms. Thoughts?

Man,you really want the bowhunters to squeal don't ya ?lol I've been to many hunting sites and on every one of them are guys crying about youth season, other types of hunting interferring with their season ,and such.Good God,they have almost 4 months to hunt with a bow and think everyone should bow down to them.

Been suggesting that for several years. It got shot down every year. What was once muzzleloader season has turned into alternate method season where anything goes. I don't care for it being in the middle of Christmas holidays. There's enough going on then. It was sold to us as a "family time" for everyone to hunt together. What about our non-hunting family. Out of town family coming in for the holidays? Things started as a time for the BP hunters to go out and have fun. Then it turned to an "extended season" Now it's this. I would love to have a 9 day BP season in early Oct. But I'm not too hopeful of the chances.

If ya want something to change, ya gotta find a heavy hitter in MDC that wants it too... that's the only way I've ever seen any changes with MDC happen.... Been 20 plus years since MDC's mindset that "stopping afternoon turkey hunting increases reproduction" was blasted out of the water, but no changes there because too many people think it should still stop at 1, even with ZERO scientific backing.... the old (its the way it's always been) mentality is hard to break sometimes.... Even the NWTF could not get it thru the hard heads of MDC....

Don is correct the links are all on the web link he provided. I will say this as nicely as I possibly can.
It would be nice to get a BP season before firearm season as a lot of states have it. However I don't see it ever happening , there are just to many Archery/Rifle hunters who would absolutely have a come apart at the mention of someone else getting a shot at a "Big Buck" before them.
I believe it could be compared to hitting a very big hornets nest with a really short stick. If you know what I mean. LOL

Black powder season is a joke. It was established to give historical re-enactors a sporting season. With the introduction of centerfire revolvers and scopes and cross bows and in-lines it has become a bozo show. Some states are "Flintlock-round ball only" That is a real blackpowder season.

Have to agree with Krank. The present regulations and timing of the "alternate method" season are a joke. I have muzzleloaders sitting idle that don't get used. I was trying for the BP managed hunts but can't seem to find any with a decent chance of getting drawn. It's a shame, I really enjoyed it and so did my sons.

I'm a bow hunter and a traditional BP shooter as well. If you want an early BP season make it a real season. Flint lock, or cap lock only and open sights only. That would knock out about 60% of the "alternative methods" city slicks.

I want all the deer firearms to be over before November 15 (can start in July), give the poor trappers a chance to be in the woods and I aggree that a flint/cap lock season would be nice to have again; don't think either will ever happen. No science or logic involved in deer management, just money=what's most popular.

It's money motivated, no doubt.

Well my thoughts on the money issue is, make a new tag. Call it a traditional muzzleloader tag AND allow us to take a deer during the regular rifle season. THEY make more money and the number of deer decreases. Win-win. When my life slows down a bit I plan to attempt this.

Back when the BP season was just muzzleloaders and started right after modern firearms, there was a different tag. I might still have one someplace. I friend of mine saw it and asked what a "muzzle deer" was. MDC said that it cost them too much money to keep a separate tag so they did away with it. Now you just use the regular firearms permit for everything. I like the whole idea of the traditional BP season. But it's a tough sell to MDC. Now days they are about streamlining everything and cutting costs.

I guess just make your own Mountain man hunt and be proud of shooting a deer with a smokepole that you built with bullets you cast. At least the deer can stay in camp and you dont have to go running it to town like the old days.

I wish they would move gun season to the first of December. It would allow the bucks to have a better chance of reaching Maturity. Look at Kansas Iowa and Illinois they all have gun seasons out of the rut and kill giant deer every year. A non resident has to draw for a tag and pays double and triple the price for a tag that mo charges.
