I dunno but lots of luck finding out. I have asked point blank questions about lures and had 100 people read it and no reply. Sometimes Dale or Bigjohn or Sesarge or DH throw in a little something but it remains proprietary technology. Its like they are all hung up on marshmellows and gusto. (I am running to my office to get my 1951 book by R.E.Burt called "Lure Making") Okay..."Reproductive organs from female in heat, anal glands, cover with urine (fox not yours) and allow two weeks to decompose, add 2 drops of asafoetida or lovage."

krank,The only lure I make myself is a castor lure for beaver and predators.Other than that,I leave the lure making to the pros.I believe I read a formula same as what you posted thou.Just easier for me to buy and go trap.

Yeah...I use simple homemade lures but I am mainly a coontrapper with an incidental bobcat or yote thrown in. Each year, I buy a jar of super duper predator curiousity scent lure. I am learning a few tricks about scent and have been harvesting glands and freezing them or putting them in vodka. Someday I will methodically concoct something. It is amazing what some guys post (on other forums of course) asking if this is ok or that is ok. Some of them are just silly. One guy said he was going to start a lure company as soon as he developed his coon fat lure. Said he had lots of it and it just gotta work. There are lots of things in the grocery store that work real good. There is a bait and lure forum and I have read the posts and really didnt get much out of it.

I give away a lot of info but some things i wont and there are a ton of formulas i wont give to even my children until i pass away! LOL! You have to keep somethings to your self to give you a edge on the up and coming new trappers. LOL BUT I WILL GIVE YOU ONE LURE ADDITIVE THAT WILL IMPROVE ANYTHING YOU USE. ASOFETIDA!! enough said! Predators of all types love the stuff and it is a matrix additive!

I wish I could be of more help, but I don't make a lot of lure myself. Bait, yes, but I end up buying lure. Maybe when I retire in a couple of years I'll have more time to devote to it. There are several good books on the subject as you probably know. Meanwhile stock up on eye of newt!

Ingredients are great, but DH, could we have the ratio of eggs to asofetida? Also, how rotten are these eggs? A few weeks? Months? Where do you get asofetida?

Good to know. I think I would rather spend $5-$10 than spend the time making one.

I see your point in buying lure. Buying the ingredients by the ounce equals the sum total of the finished product. The lure I make goes in front of the game camera first. Some of my concoctions have resulted in fur. I make fish oil and save reject honey that I cant sell and freeze alot of fish scraps as well as make fishoil. I have caught everything (predator) on my homemade fish oil. It is real rowdy. The aging is real important so the middle of the season is no time to get interested in lure making. I do treat myself to a few bucks worth of store bought lure every year. After meeting Ray Milligan and attending his seminar, I am partial to his stuff. (even though he is now an elk guide and his kids make the lure) What is bad is arbitrarily mixing stuff together think that some creature is going to throw himself on the trap when he smells it. The coyote smells your bait and thinks "wow a mouse had sex with a fox in a beaver lodge and ate bacon with jello and took a shower with a skunk...."

i know that makin lure in the middle of the season isnt the right time to start but the only reason i even thought about it is this female has turned a soso set that i prolly should have pulled a while ago (only 2 fox in2 months) into a killer set with just a little of her urine that dribbled out when i dispatched her taking 6 more fox in 3 days i figured i should use all i could from her and thanks dh for the egg thing

You should collect urine from all your females this time of the year.Keep it seperate from the male urine.

Yep you can set a trap any where and catch god knows ive done it many times blind setting for coons and mink. But the thing about lures and baits are, I can pretty much put the animal where i want them not the other way around. I can pull them from one side of a creek or stream to the side i want them. I can make them go through briars so i dont have to. I can make them cross a property boundary when i need to. So there is all ways a way to use the lures and baits to your advantage. Most people dont have those concerns but some do. So you need just the right amount of this and that to put the animal right where you want him or her. Another thing about lures and baits. When setting areas of high theft which is better a dirt hole set or a flat set well concealed with a great lure to put the animal on the trap. With no one the wiser. Or lets say your trapping buddy and you are trapping side by side and you want that edge. A certain mix of this and that could give you that edge. But dont ever take blind setting for granted its a great way to add numbers to your fur catch. But sometimes ya need a edge Eggs need to be rotted for at least 2 months in hot to warm weather. 2 dozen eggs 1/2 teaspoon of real asofetida! asofetida can be bought off line at any food and spice outlet. It comes from india it is attained from the rosin from tree roots. It can be bought here! www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=Asafoetida&tag=theepicentree-20&index=gourmet&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

The anal glands set right along the side of the anus.Remove it and about 3 inches of the anal track.I think your suppose to add just enough urine to cover.Let rot down, then grind.

It's disgusting work. Also I'm not near as secretive about it as I let on. And while I make some lures that I feel are second to NONE, it really is easier to buy GREAT lures. Makin' your own is a fun, and nasty, hobby that leads to hardly anywhere at all.
