The .204 and like-sized guns being used for anything larger than coyotes is a travesty and shows a huge lack of respect for the animal.
The 3400 fps figure given above as a speed for a .204 load is pretty darn slow. I generally keep mine in the 3850-3900 fps range. Much faster and you can run into issues (like the groups opening up to almost 1/2"!) and general barrel wear (although unlike the .220 Swift, you just don't seem to hurt a .204).
Sighted in at 200 you should be dead-on to 400, depending on gun, load, etc.

Really fond of my ol 788 Rem in 222.Reloading ,you can make it about any kind of varmint gun you want.I can load it down to 22 mag speeds and take coon, cats, fox, and small game without any damage or I can load it up with a 40 grain ballistic tip and hammer coyotes out to 250 yards.

The .222 rem was an old standby years ago. Unfortunatly the .223 competed with it after 'Nam and the .223 won "not because it was better" but the availabilty of mil-surp and the M16- AR rave. Yup, the 222 was a neat little gun and those I know with them arent interested in selling.

krank,I've killed a pile of fur with that rifle, crows too.Used to have a couple of places we shot crows on a long uphill grade making a perfect back stop. We'd place the caller out about 150 yards where 3 big ol dead trees sat on that hillside.Using a hot(for a 222) load pushing a 40 gr ballistic tip,it would make those cropws vaporize. It would hold it's own with both my buddies 223 and 22-250.Nice thing is the barrel didn't heat up like the 250 and held the edge for accuracy over the 223.Both of their rifles were heavy barrels to boot. That rifle has close to 3000 rounds thru it and will still produce 3/4 in. groups at 200 yards.I've another Rem 788 that has taken a slew of deer and coyotes.Shooting a 75 gr. V-max for coyotes it isn't a fur gun by no means .It would take a whole spool of thread to sew up a coyote shot with it. My buddy did work up a blue dot load for his 223 that allowed him to use it as I do my 222.It does a pretty good job on varmints out to about 150 before it runs outa steam, but very fur friendy calling load.

I know this is off subject but I won a marlin 25-06 this year from the whitetails unlimited banquet last year it's dead nuts at 200 and the bullet size is small velocity is blazing knock gown power is good enough only con is bullets are hard to find and for Varmit round they are expensive .. That's my 2 cents lol

That 25-06 is a fine, flat shooting round but will throw fur into the surrounging counties lol

Theres a real fine line between "hit" and "mangle" on these varmit guns. Back in the 1960's when I read every issue of American Rifleman, the .222 Rem was synonimos with varmit gun. It was the fox and Texas turkey gun. Anything that needed to be still intact after the shot was 222 material. Right in there was the 25-20 and 218 bee and 219 zipper and 22 k-hornet. I have always wanted a Savage model 24 over and under in a 222rem and 20 guage. I have a 22lr-20 guage and a 30-30/ 20 guage. You dont see them 222's for sale, everybody I know that has one wont sell it.

I think the rimfires are a 100yd gun max for me. And I would pick the mag. That being said a hornet or fireball would work great for what you want. Hornady has the new 17 hornet load coming out that would be a sweet little gun. But I think the 17 fireball would be the ticket. The wife got me an upper in 17 Remington for Christmas cant wait to try it out. She bought me dies, brass, and some bullets too. Waiting on my 17 funnel to get here so I can work up some loads. I think the 17 is the best pelt saving caliber there is. Small hole in no exit and total liquid inside. Going to new Mexico in febuary to hunt coyotes will post some results when I get back

I just recently purchased a 17 to try out but IMO I like my marlin 22mag but thats just because I have had it for years and it is a real tack driver for a mag. I think whatever gun gives you confidence is the gun you should use and when I squeeze off a round with that old marlin I know I am skinning that night.

All this talk about guns.......It made my disease flare up and I went gun shop hopping and bought me a new .22 mag. I have one but it is a Henry lever with a checkered stock and I found out it is worth alot more than I thought so I locked it up .Dont want to tear it up) The new gun is a Savage bolt with a bull barell and synthetic stock. This is a gun I can throw in the truck and use everyday and push away barb wire with it when I cross fence. I can carry it to check traps.

All this gun talk caused me to get mine out and shoot it. I had mounted the scope and the gun shop I got the rings from bore sited it in and I had never shot it. Last week I shot a box of shells thru it and never twisted a screw, that bore site was dead on.

Hey I am a newbie here. This is interesting on the cartridges. In my experience the 22mag, it works, the 22hornet is really my favorite. If you reload and like trying loads you date the hornet. Pickup capsules at Walmart the 22mag is your date. The 17HMR is a shoot ground squirrels and other small varmints. I like my 223 but end up loading it to hornet or slightly above velocities. Never tried the 17 CF's, the 17 hornet has me looking at a new date. So it goes we now have more choices than ever before and generally come back to what we brought to dance. For me it is a 22mag, 22hornet maybe 222 mildly loaded. Forgive me for this long first post.

I like my 22 mag but I can reload hornets alot cheaper and get more range. I also load 22 hornet with primer only and and air rifle pellet. Like a CB cap.....

Wont work on a 17 rimfire. Need that centerfire primer to push that pellet. I wouldnt worry about a factory 17 rimfire tearing anything up at dispatch.
