When checking before daylight I use a LED headlamp with multiple color lens. The white light I mostly use for walking with and the red lens comes in handy for dispatching skunks at a distance-- you can stand back and see them really well with the red light. I also carry a backup LED light in my jacket pocket. This thing is the size of your palm and only weighs a few ounces. It uses very little battery and the bulb does not burn out. The greatest thing about this light though is it is very bright. I think I could spot a deers eyes at 100 yards at night. It is much brighter than a big bulky 4D cell mag lite and fits in my pocket. What a great technology that you can get at the store for $20 or so.

I bought one and it isn't bright at all....it was made by stream light and was $25??? It takes 3 AAA batteries and shines green and white. I threw away the package...do you think Bass Pro will still take it back?

my experience with led's is they are pretty bright up close, but the beam doesnt cast very far. ok to walk by, and they dont seem to spook game. i like to use em to walk in to where im gonna sit to hunt turkey or deer. i would like to find a good one that throws the beam farther in a tight spot.

I think they have a rating but it isn't candlepower-- I think it is lumens or something like that. I know the one handheld I have is a brinkman and I payed $20 or so and it is blinding bright and the beam really casts out there. I'm sure the more $$ then the more lumens but you can get a good one without breaking the bank.
Now the headlamp I have is pretty cheap and you can walk by it or it is great for doing remakes but it doesn't cast a beam real far.

We get rechargeable leds from fire master at work, in my opinion you can't beat them they are small you can slide it in your back pocket. They are pricey at right around a 100 bucks but they are worth every penny they come with a charger that wires into your vehicle and you can mount it anywhere in the vehicle that is convenient the charge lasts forever and they are super bright and will cast a beam a long ways

I use a mini mag lighted switched over to led, very bright. I also have two 3D LED mag lights, they are insane bright. Mag Light advertise they will shine 364 meters, lights up the tree line at the end of my field 150 yds away like day time! Use the other one in my crew boat on the river. There is a 2D version also. Doubles as a head cracker too! LoL!

Me and some other coonhunters have dumped our wheatlights and just use a 4D mag light with rechargable batteries. Throw a beam across a football field. LEDs are not as bright BUT they are great to see up close and some get like 100 hrs to a battery. I got a clip-on LED for my hat and it is like 5 years old and I replaced batteries once 2 yrs ago. These new tactical lights are awesome. They are expensive. I have a ruger flashlight that uses one AA battery and it throws a beam that is blinding. It has one of those square lightbulbs. The tactical lights are for military/police and mount on an AR15.
