I have a "trappers helper" that I got from Ron Leggett and it serves the same purpose and a hole lot more, both on the water and land trapping.

I found a hoe handle in a dumpster with the blade missing. The shank that was left makes an excellent water hook. A golf ball retriever work well too and will collaps down to a manageble size.

I have on a a six foot wooden rod about 1 3/4 in in dia. Use it as a wading staff when going to pick up ducks. Comes in handy.
