Well just about everything is ready for deer season. Two months ago I had all but given up on being able to hunt this year. Laying in a hospital bed hating life. But the camper is at camp stocked with everything we should need. Rifle is sighted in. Truck is gassed up. I still get pretty tired and have to take my time walking. But at least I'm gonna be out there. Plus I get to hunt with my sons this year. Just thankful I got another year. Really doesn't matter if I kill a deer or not. Being there this year is the biggest part of it.

Hang in there sarge. You have to know just how hard to push yourself. Getting out with your sons is a big plus.

That's great! Just enjoy the experience in a less active roll. Have fun with your sons and others. Let them do some of the work for ya! I'm envious! Haven't done a deer camp thing for L O N G time. Best of luck to you all.

Same old for me. Been throwing things in the truck all week. Headed down Friday. I am the youngest member of camp. Some of the older members are thinking about selling out. None of the younger generation seems to care. We have several small tracts that are adjoining and add up to about 200 acres and butt up to corp land. All timber. Some of that land cost $65 an acre back in the day. We get letters offering $2000 sight unseen. Hunting clubs. Sarge- I would avoid tree stands and dragging deer. Other than that you just have to pull the trigger.

Thanks everyone! I've already been told by everybody in the family that tree stands are forbidden for me this year. I'm taking the Artic Cat over for a tune up today so that if I manage to tag a deer it goes on my deer sled pulled by the ATV. I've been shooting the past few days, and it's been a challenge. But my Savage 99 is an old friend and we got it worked out. Camp is going to be my two sons and my longtime friend Smitty, a co-worker from my days working at the prison. Everything else aside, we're going to eat well and just enjoy being out together.

Good for you. Opening day of firearms season. Man, I know I'm on the outs, but it means nothing to me. Haven't hunted opening day since 2011, opening weekend 2012. I haven't hunted the regular FIREARMS season since then, with all the Orange Army and all the shenanigans they present. I can't hunt my own property for fear of getting shot, for real. I'll spend the next two weeks running folks off of private property, watching and trying to catch road hunters, and trying in general to not get too pissed off.
So few deer hunters are actually HUNTERS. And all these out-of-state rich asses (okay, some are pretty cool) that lease everything around here. One guy leases almost 3000 acres on 8 different properties. Like I said- rich.
Put me on the ground with my stickbow in hand. No one else around, just me and the critters. THAT'S hunting for me.
Good luck to everyone who ventures forth this weekend.

Not sure I'll mess with it this year. We are in a CWD zone so our season runs til 1st Dec for rifle. Everyone wants deer jerky but no offers to help with the process.

We LOVE working up our deer. Also, we now pressure cook a lot of it. Mmmmm...

My biggest thing about deer season is the camp. I feel sorry for guys that are back home by noon after they dropped the deer off at the locker. They watch tv for the rest of the day. I will go down to camp and sleep on a cot in a tiny cabin. Gas lantern and wood stove. Get up early and go to bed after dark. Live like folks 100 years ago. No electricity or running water for a week. Deer will be hung up for display and then skinned and quartered. Heart and liver for breakfast and tenderloins the day after. I will bust my deer down and put all the meat in cloth bags to hang and drip. Then I will sit by the fire and flesh my hide. If I get bored then I will shoulder a rifle and go for a walk about. I visit my gutpile with a shotgun as I hate crows. When I go home I will feel like I am missing something.

I took my ATV over for a tune up yesterday. Went to load it up on the trailer and it wouldn't start. my son helped me push it on the trailer. Got to the mechanic's place and come to find out it was out of gas I'd just filled it a couple of days before. Come to find out it had a leak in the fuel line, easy fix though. Looking forward to spending some campfire time just relaxing. I like the evenings sitting by the fire listening to the owls. No TV or other distractions. My oldest son is a good camp cook so we'll eat good. Taking the Dutch oven to make bread.

I feel sorry for the guys that haul a camper as big as a mobile home with a TV and all the other things that turn your brain into mush. Might as well stay home. My brother has one. Last time I went to a deer camp with him he sat in the camper watching videos on the DVD player. Deer camp is a magical time for me and I'm not going to waste it watching football on TV.

Years ago, we voted on bringing in electricity on a pole. Unanimous no. It just makes things complicated. I will admit that it is handy to turn on a light while I light my lantern. We do have an elderly couple that rolls in a fifth wheel travel trailer. I get up in the middle of the night to take a leak and see them over there watching satellite in their pop-out trailer. I throw on a log and go back to sleep. I try to keep it old school.

With deer eating up yards and gardens year round, and the most remote spot in the state being about two miles from a road, I've never really understood the deer camp idea. How far from home do you go that requires a camp?

I have a cabin in town surrounded by Gov land where I hunt, about a 3 hr drive. Has 'Lectric, Propane stove, wood heat and jug water. Truly love that place.

If the closest deer are three hours away, I can understand overnighting. But if I loved a cabin, I'd live there. If I did camp, I'd want it solo and simple.

Well I live on the farm I hunt, so I guess deer camp is my house. It's pretty comfortable.
