You know when it is strong when the smoke starts rolling off the steel.

If you boil traps in it (deleted in water of course) be careful of the fumes also, The fumes are toxic

I used the acid years ago to strip all the wax off a bunch of traps that had a bad build up on them. It works and it's quick, but you have to be super careful. I didn't know to dilute it just used the acid straight from the bottle. I did use protective eye ware, rubber gloves and a mask for the fumes. Used a wire coat hanger to put the steel in the acid and to take them out. Put 'em in a bucket of water to soak overnight. Then lifted them out with the hanger again and rinsed with a garden hose. It cleaned them up really good, but I don't use it anymore. I did all that in the garage with the door open and a fan running. The acid etched the concrete floor where it dripped off the traps. It just seemed too dangerous.

I do it near my hose, and I hit them with water quick too. We used to spray pontoon boat tubes with muriatic acid that were caked with hard water deposits and dried on algae. The stuff would sizzle and pop, but when we hosed it off the bottoms of the tubes were cleaner than the tops... That's when I quit using Tidy Bowl (it got really lightweight) and went to the acid.

Lye use to be the go to for cleaning traps. Tweakers started using it to make drugs and it suddenly became regulated. I think it would have been better to hung the tweakers as they do society no good.

We used to have a crock of liquid lye with a tap on it. We used it to clean stainless steel milking equipment. It dissovled that butter fat. I use lye to dehair deer hides. I was in a little small town hardware store and snagged about 5 cans. Ace hardware stocks it as well as strike anywhere matches (try finding them) Yup those fumes will scorch your lungs and the Dr cant do anything. One time in the restaurant, my boss said he was going to make the ultimate mop bucket. He was in the mop closet pouring bleach and draino and who knows what in the bucket and next thing he was passed out on the floor. The acid etch works fine and is safe if you dont get stupid. I pour the waste in the driveway to kill weeds and make sure the dog is tied up.

I used Sani Flush for years. Then none of the local stores carried it. Switched to lye and the same thing happened. Past year or so I been using Wax-B-Gone. Doesn't work as well as lye but at least I can get it.

Hot water dissolves wax and it floats to the top.

Also, I only use acid on brand new traps. Dulls the shine and give the steel a patina. Takes dye real good. If the traps are rusty then its hard to see what the acid is doing and why are you doing it. I cut the top out of a beer keg and keep it full of walnut hulls. Leave it year round and the walnut has done nothing to the aluminum.
