I believe what's used is called "the frog". It's the built up compacted dirt and shiite on the bottom of the hooves. I tried to get some from local stables but none of them cooperated. 😞 images.app.goo.gl/hb7rAHoKo7W3YXWD7

The frog is the middle of a hoof. If you frogged a horse then you cut too much off. When a horse plants his foot then the frog should not contact the ground. I used to trim 4 horses and a mule and here come the dogs. They were after those trimmings. Man they stunk. Kinda like toe jam. The old lure recipe was fill a jar with hoof trimmings and top off with water and set in sun. It turned black and stunk like nothing you ever smelled. I just threw up in my mouth a little just thinking of it. If you want to try it then find a farrier. Hoof trimmings was an old time trap lure. Another old lure that I think is a bit more versatile is dead mice. I used to raid grain bins and get dozens of mice in a few minutes. I never fermented just used slightly ripe. Mice are #1 food out there.

When I worked at the prison there were lots of mice running around, rats too (the 4 legged kind, but some 2 legged also) My old trapping partner (Long since passed away) used to bring mouse traps in with him. He caught a lot of them. He caught quite a bit of fur using them as bait.

When I had horses (5 at one time, although 2 belonged to my brother) we relied on a farrier to trim and shoe them. Mike is right about the smell of the trimmings. It stinks to high Heaven. It was my job to clean up the mess after the farrier left. Made the mistake of throwing the trimmings in a ditch below the house one time. Our dog found them and rolled in it. He had to sleep outside for a long time

Seems like the hoof lure was popular out West. A loud call lure. I made a batch years ago but cant say if it was responsible for any catches.

I thought the trimmings used were the Carrotine (sp) outer rim of the hoof, like finger nails.

It is Bob, as mentioned, I think it's used more out West. Not that it wouldn't work here, just not as commonplace.
