Looks like all the big fellas out there planting corn today. Most of last years bean ground had already be worked and fertilizer applied so they're at it. Suppose to rain tonight might have encouraged them.

Yup.....Put two tanks of anhydrous down on my place. $3600.00 per tank. Thats $200 per acre. Fertilizer is short supply again this year so we applied an additional $2000 worth of fertilizer that we didnt want but it was all they had. Seed is going to run about $400 for 50#. Think about that when you drive down the road and look at those dang farmers driving those fancy tractors. It is getting hard to take. Its all part of the plan.

Watched a YouTube video last night about how the government/big business is driving the small rancher/farmer out of business through regulation, and controlling prices. It's mainly about meat production in the West, but basically it's about the entire country. Upset me quite a bit, and it's also sad. Here is a link to the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3SWfbza5Lk

If you look up farm programs in your county you can find what farmer or corporation is getting government payouts. Big eye opener is the biggest boys getting the most.
After the flood of '93 many farmers suddenly were able to buy track hoes ,track loaders, and dozers. They changed the looks of the country side and many drainages and not for the better IMO. Drained the potholes that use to line the river, cleared all the brush off the ditch banks, and installed pump stations. All of this has had an impact on wildlife.

Whats bad is farmers will borrow as much money as they can. Same government that loans the money jerks the rug out.
Farmers dont look at bulldozing an acre of brush as hurting the wildlife. They see it as increasing production. Right or wrong thats what they do and it's their property.
Now they are pushing the bird flu as spreading to cattle. That gives them an open ticket to destroy herds.
I have been mushroom hunting and there are corn cobs all over the timber. I guess those coons drag them back to the safety of the brush and feast.
Another money racket is crop insurance. When a farmer spends $360,000.oo on fertilizer he needs some protection. The government does subsidize the premium.

I've looked at the list of government farmers in my county before and all it did was raise my blood pressure.
We've let the government get involved in and take control of damn near everything. We're going to seriously regret it someday, and probably sooner rather than later.
Anyhoo, there's my bright and sunny take on things today.

I have to report my tillable acreage and what I am planting to the USDA to be eligible for any programs. If I dont march in line then I lose. A lot of these farmers depend on these programs. I dont care much myself. I know one farmer that threatens to turn his back on the whole deal and plant hemp. When I was just out of high school, Dad and I toyed with having me farm. We figgered that if he let me use the equipment for free and didnt charge land rent that I might clear $9000 a year if all went perfect. Things were better then than they are now. John Deere has a new tractor with no seat or steering wheel. It is made for the American farmer who has lost his ass and has no where to turn.

Twenty years ago, the USDA encouraged all the farmers to grow corn for ethanol. They planted a genetically altered corn that was unfit for human consumption. I think it was called G35 or something like that. Market price was sky high until harvest and then price went way low. Nobody wanted the corn so it all went to China on barges. We know the Chinese would never make food out of that. Once again the farmers got rooked. Next season, here come the USDA beating the E-85 drum.

I used to buy corn mash for horse and cattle feed. The wet mash was like $7 per cwt and the dry was twice that. Hoses had to have the dry but cows could eat the wet. A few monthes went by and the price tripled. I guess the word got out. THat was it for me.

Went out yesterday evening to see if I could see any turkey going to roost but everywhere I checked fields were being worked. Went back out this morning early and same thing. Oh well, this way they'll be out of the way when the season starts tomorrow.

Corn going in everywhere. 36 degrees at sun up. Dry as a bone. Morels are played out. Brush is growed up. In years past it has been May 1st but this year is early. Got into the turkeys Saturday but they were henned up and I got to watch them strut 75 yards away.
