Fellas we are almost in October and the temps are flirting with 90. We only got 1/2 inch of rain and that was only enough to settle the dust for a couple of days.

Some areas South of KC got 6 inches last week with destructive wind. We got barely 2 inches but it was welcome.

Not enough to wet the ground at my place. The storm split and went north and south around me.

Pretty much the same as everyone else here at my place. I even washed my truck in hopes of bringing on some rain, but to no avail. This weekend is my last at Rural King. I resigned so I could have more time to hunt/trap and to spend time with the wife and kids.

Rabbit season opens Oct 1 and I've always killed one rabbit opening day for the dogs. This year it's just too hot to do it. Ran the dogs a couple of days ago and almost let them get too hot. A few years back I lost a dog from the heat and swore never again.

Camped with Ray at the blackpowder shoot. It was so hot that I wanted to ditch my mountain man clothes and run around like an indian in a loin cloth but nobody wants to see that. Ray sat in his truck with the AC on for a little while. I almost put my chair in the middle of the creek. Terrible dry out. Yeah we get rain but it is soaked up and gone. I can see a cloud of dust 5 miles away from the combines.

mmaxwell I'm jealous. We only got a trace, less than a tenth.
On a good note the temps are wonderful this morning, nice and brisk.

Ran my beagles this morning and killed one rabbit over them. That rabbit will be cooked up for their reward. They really pounded with this cooler weather but we sure could use a rain to improve scenting conditions and wash down some of the pollen.

Weatherman says high of 78 but it is still hitting 80+ in the late afternoon. Last weekend there was frost warnings and people on FB were showing frost on windshields but no frost in Bates county. Last night I cut up my last hindquarter and sliced the best for jerky and ground the rest. Traps are in good shape except I feel compelled to make some more stakes and I found a 330 that needs a new trigger. Need to round up my CRs and hang them back up. I will try to make a coni trigger out of a bike spoke as I dont want to spend shipping and handling. Heck I may have on in the wrapper somewhere. Saturday, we are meeting at deer camp to tidy up. We hired the Amish to cut and split a cord of wood. That is a chore I gladly farmed out. Bought a new outhouse. The 100 year old one burned in a fire last spring. Bought one already made for the priced of 4 sheets of plywood. Its purdy. That fire burned for 2 weeks and went for miles through the timber. Did more good than harm.

Turkey hunted a spot yesterday along a creek at the bottom of a bluff. This is a CA and they had mowed a path around most of it in the last couple of weeks. There was frost on the ground everywhere the bluff shaded the ground. Didn't think it was that cold but then again cold don't bother me.
Woke up during the night to thunder, lightning, and the sound of rain. Didn't get but .06 of an inch, just enough to settle a little dust. Weather folk calling for more later this week and we desperately need.

An old timer told me when I was a kid to get used to the fall weather and you wont be so cold in the winter. He said to walk around in mild weather in shirt sleaves and dont get all bundled up or you will be a woose all winter.

While in my working years I'd not ever set in my truck to eat my lunch or during breaks. Didn't matter if it was 100- degrees or 20 degrees. Set in the shade when hot and in the sun with a wind break when cold. Young fellas would set in their trucks warming up and usually suffered after lunch, getting back out in the cold.
I ,for one, love colder weather. Shame the days are shorter then.
