I think Charles was the real deal and the son lives off his Dads reputation. I know he likes to kick me off Tman for things that I didnt think was wrong. (its his site)

I've watched a LOT of Charlie Dobbins videos. Never saw one where I didn't learn something. Haven't spent any time on T-Man. From the little bit I've seen of it, there's just a bunch of people arguing over stupid stuff. Never got bit by the cage trap bug, trapped some coon and groundhogs for my aunt that lives in town but that's about it.

To answer Mike's question- Right now is a bad time to start up a trap manufacturing company or is it? No way. Cage trapping has ZERO to do with TRAPPING trapping. Folks want and need a quality cage trap 12 months out of the year, every year. I have most of the 12 or so I still own (I had over 20 at one time) loaned out. I don't always get them back it seems. I could sell a couple hundred here locally easy, and probably more. They're just a fine, fine trap. Brian's BRILLIANCE was that he re-worked the thinking on this design some, and made it better yet. AND when you get done with the basic 12" trap (the "coon" trap) you have less then 6" of wasted material left over. Genius. And to answer your question raptortrapper, no, I don't see building these traps. Brian was having a lot of physical issues and I thought I could help him out. So I paid him the money and that was that. I never made it back to his place, and haven't talked to him in a long time, something I feel real guilty about. I forget about it for months at a time (it's a stroke thing and it sucks). I got down physically myself about the time I bought the company, then we started out restaurant business, and man, there's not been enough time. I'm also a poor boy, and this operation requires a serious manufacturing facility. If I was SMART (I ain't) I'd turn the restaurant into a trap factory. It would work. I imagine Brian is unhappy with me. I gave him a lot of money but never followed thru on the deal. One week I had a truck scheduled to go get the stuff (it's a lot of stuff) but the guy had to cancel. And before I could call Brian he put it off again, then, stroke thing again, I flat forgot about it. Seriously. I really need to find Brian's number, again (I lost it, a stroke thing, not funny) and minimum try to get the equipment moved down here, if he even still has it. My luck he sold it again, and I guess I'd deserve that. It's only money... And that's that. Brian and Rosa are COOL folks. Dale

I would imagine the only requirements would be a dry roof and electricity. I see a lot of amazing stuff made in old barns or even outside in the cold.

Thanks, Dale, for the update. Bummer to hear this, but don't blame you one bit. I'll take a look at Bridger, Comstock, or something like that. But I CERTAINLY want something that has a frame to it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It will be mainly for coons, but I have recently scored an area with high bobcat numbers, so need to be able to handle both. Thanks again!!

Might look at those Williams. I think they'd hold any coon alive. I got mione from Volker's.

I would imagine the only requirements would be a dry roof and electricity. I see a lot of amazing stuff made in old barns or even outside in the cold. Only. Brian's shop is 50 X 50. 110 and 220. You need air and/or dehumidification for drying the dip. LOTS of lights. Good ventilation. Etc. etc. A fork lift would be the best, but a smaller tractor might work (you have to unload lots of material0 and then load up lots of traps (don't think I haven't thought this thru many times (and then I forget about it). So, a concrete floor starts the project off at about $22K. For starters. Hmmm. Well, there's ONE machine gun sold. I'd sell the "business" for exactly what I've got in it. $53,000. That includes a lot of tools, jigs, five Miller welders (three are brand-new) There's an old 8' brake that weighs a ton, but is a super piece that gets a real workout. Lots of stuff. Then you've got to get it moved and have a place to move it to. Then build the business back up, which would be the least of my worries. There are still standing orders in place- even MFA (which was Hilltops biggest customer) was willing to come back on board. Brian priced this business to me fifteen years ago at $175,000, which was a steal even then. So, $53,000 takes it. Bids? Dale

I found a wad of muskrats yesterday in a backwater slough, more than I've seen in years. So I go to a PILE of muskrat stuff back in my timber, and I get reminded again of Brian. He made the collapsible colony traps and the tall 110 stabilizers that I dug out of the weeds.
He also had a otter and 'coon-proof fish basket. I have a standing order for 100 of those down here at the LOZ if I was to ever build them.
He did the round beaver hoops (yuk, but they sold). He made a cool little coil spring tool for trap work. I pulled some of his mink and rat stretchers out of another shed yesterday too.
He built the MEANEST catch stick on the planet. It was a heavy mother, but it never failed and doubled as a noggin knocker of you were so inclined.
Lots of neat things, but the cage traps are the money shot.
Dale
