Well since trappers and hunters aren't doing it Mother Nature is. I been finding several dead coon while running my beagle dogs. I would assume it's distemper.

I thankfully haven't seen it in my area, but I've heard the same thing from different places up here.

We had it something like 5 years ago and it took a toll on them then. Their numbers had increased until they were over the lands carrying capacity. With the loss of habitat ,that capacity will only decrease.

Sounds like mother nature is trying to take care of the human population too.

A few years ago, I climbed a den tree and shined a light in there and there was a whole pile of dead coons. Kind of shocking. I see a lot hit by cars. Maybe they are out walking around delirious with the fever. A coon out in the middle of the day is a warning sign of distemper. Dogs are also susceptible.

Marc it's still too early for this stretch along the river. May not even be any there this year. Last years floods deposited huge amounts of sand over the area. It also destroyed many of my fishing spots along there. The water took out huge sections of the banks leaving vertical banks that are still caving off.

Had a sick coon at my work today. Its eyes didn't look right and it didn't spook from people. It was taken care of.

Had distemper go thru here 10-15 years ago two times in about 4 years, the coons recovered in two or three years but the skunk population is still quite low. I trapped one skunk in the last five or six years and see road kill about once a year, it's a tough life for critters.

Had a coon sitting in the neighbors front yard. I pulled in to the drive and walked up to the door. Meanwhile, the coon just sat there. Neighbor was amazed and asked me to shoot it. I told him I will give him a bang up deal and haul it off too. And I did.
