Anyone from around the KC or St Joseph area that would be willing to teach a fella to call coyotes?

I usually do ok but have had no luck this year. You would think this nasty weather would put them on the move.

You would think. I saw more driving to work with no snow and 50 degree Dec weather!!! I'm looking to learn how to call and set up.

There are a ton of tutorial videos out there. Save your money on gadgets. I use an mp3 player that fits in my pocket and has 100 sound files on it. They sell for nothing these days. I laugh at our old cassette players that ate batteries and ran slow in the cold. The CDs were an improvement using a Walkman and an extension speaker. I bought one of those $150 callers and it scared everything away and brought in the bluejays. For a gun, you just use what you are good with. You see yotes that are hanging out at two or three hundred yards but many shots are close and fast. I had one yote come out of nowhere and grab my tape player as soon as I sat down. I was so surprised all I could manage was a texas heart shot straight up the rectum to make him drop the player.
I have had better luck with bobcats and coons than yotes. Big thing with yotes is wind. If wind is wrong then you will never get a shot. Not so much an issue with bobcat and total non issue with coon.

Calling, like trapping, is all about location. While you don't have to be that "within a few inches" like trapping, it is important to be where they are. Sounds are like lures with some being better certain times of the year. Now is breeding season and I've always had better luck with coyote vocalization that animal distressed calls. Although I use only mouth calls, there are so many good electronic calls on the market that getting the right sound isn't hard at all.

Used a rabbit call for years. Worked good. My Dad gave it to me. I met Dan Thompson the famous caller from Wyoming. He turned me on to "howling". You know you got the right howl when a yote responds back. Sounds like a great idea but it took a bit to master. In fact I am still a little rough around the edges. The fox pro has a good sound but I just like to be simpler than that.

I have heard of turkey hunters having coyotes come to their call and attack their decoy.
