A lot of posts on this. I have had people ask a few questions so revisit. Years ago, we made boards out of old weathered barn siding that we whittled down. Too thick (full inch) and too wide. I laugh at how they looked now. Dad gave me some wire stretchers for muskrat. I needed coon size so I copied them out of heavy wire. Getting better. I discovered wood boards and milled down pine to 1/2" thick and copied NAFA regulation size. Perfect. Then I killed 110 coons in Nov-Dec of season (2011?) and was hurting bad for stretchers. I had a bunch of wire and didn't like them. I converted them to wood/wire and they work swell. Attachment Deleted

What do you guys think about using soft maple for stretchers since bass wood doesn't grow here? Soft maple is plentiful and hardly gets used for anything but maybe pallets. Do you think it would be soft enough for pinning?

I use pine for my adjustable cat and coyote stretchers and it works fine for me. We do have basswood in Mo. Bart Hiller could probably hook you up.

Depends on how the lumber is dried /cured. Everybody thinks pine is soft. That's kiln dried pine. Native pine air dry is hard as a rock. Them Amish saw down cottonwood that gets hard when you cover it with tin. Pops- Did you get one of my adjustables for a pattern? I had Yote saw me a bunch of 48" x10"s that were 3/8" thick out of his pine. Whatever he did made it come out soft and I can push a pin right in.

If I remember right Doug bought a couple and I bought the rest just so's you wouldn't have to haul em back home. I can and do use pine, but soft maple is plentiful around here, most of them gets burned cause no one wants them so just wondered if anyone tried making a stretcher with them.

I just wonder if soft maple is soft if air dryed. We buy these 1x4s at Lowes that are amazingly clear and straight for $2.25 per 8 ft. They are smooth with rounded corners. Very nice wood for this day and age. I know. Go air stapler. Them guys on trapperman all use air staplers. They claim if they didn't use air staplers then there wouldn't be enough hours in the day to put up all their fur.
