So, I'm tired of missing coyotes with the MB550s. I'm looking to go to a larger kill area. What's y'alls opinion? Dog on or dogless? #2 or #3? Never fear as it won't be a Duke.

Not busting on you , why don’t you adjust to what they are doing ? I am not a coyote person by any meen’s , so don’t take it wrong . Isn’t a 550 the size of a 2 ? I like those no bs traps if your looking for a new trap .

I had a pair of those MB550s that I won from the MDC for turning in bobcat teeth. I had more misses with those 2 traps in one season than all my other traps combined. The reason....I don't know to this day. I gave the darn things away. My go to coyote trap is the northwoods or bridger #3. I don't do lamented jaws or 4 coiling as I don't see it is needed, but that's just me. The #2 northwoods or bridgers would be my second choice. As with the bigger traps, no lamented jaws or 4 coiling.
I do replace the factory dogs with Custers Top Dog as no coyote will bend them. I only run about 8 inches of chain with 3 swivels (one at trap base..one in middle..one at anchor point).

Mine will be on drags simply because it's too hard to find a good location where I can get a stake in. Seems like if I find a good location I can't drive one. Exposed chain & drags doesn't bother them anyway, so long as it's not right at the set. I'm curious to handle the dogless & dog on at the NTA to see which I like better.

Used 1 3/4 northwoods for years on fox. They held every coyote that worked the sets

IMO Brian, your just wasting money going to a 3 for yotes. A good #2 does just fine for me. And yes, I use mostly modified dukes but have a little bit of everything now. I have mostly dog on but have most of the dogs reinforced. They will chew em up. If you want to eliminate the hassle, go dogless. Here's my warning on dogless, choose a pan that doesn't move before firing. Montgomery style dogless plans will move side to side if not stepped on directly in the center. I learned this the last week of land trapping the hard way. 4 missed cats in a great trap, other than that issue. Exposed walk thru sets.

I will probably go with dog on traps. I've got the #2 Montgomery step ins coming. They should be here next week. I don't plan to laminate the jaws on any trap that I buy unless someone can convince me otherwise. I'm also looking into the Expand-A-Pans. I just know I'm tired of missing coyotes that should've been caught.
