According to the MDC otter nuisance control, you should buy 2 Tomahawk brand live traps, cut the ends out, and wire or weld them together. That makes a 6 foot long 2 door, 2 pedal trap. What about just extending a live trap a couple feet? The one I have is a feed store special built heavy enough with good wire & solid door with a good locking mechanism on it. The pedal is at the very back of the trap though & the trigger arm coming off the pedal is in triangular form. I'm thinking a little rebar to add 18 inches to the end of it. The trap is 36 inches already. Would the extra 18 cause the otter to go on through? Thoughts?

Back in the 60s when Havahart made a great product, they had an option to add a fish cage to a #3A. I think the 3a was 11x11x40. The added on cage was a foot long. I wouldn't weld two good traps together just add a mesh extension to one.

I was thinking of welding an 18x12x12 extension cage with washers. Then taking the back mesh off the live trap and welding washers that would match the extension. When I'm done with the otter I could unbolt the extension & replace the end mesh. I'm wondering if 18 inches is enough. I'm thinking that once the door slams down on their tail they will jump forward (fingers crossed) and I want them to have enough room so the door latches like it should.

If its underwater then the door might take some extra spring or weight to get it to drop. I wouldn't mess up a good live trap just wire the fish cage to to end of the trap and maybe use tin as blinders to make otter come in the door.

I'll be setting it on the dock in their toilet areas.
