Is it me or is this store bought DP bait crazy expensive. Personally I use marshmallows and a Kool-aid juice. Has anybody compared the two on the trap line (i'm to cheap) It can't work that much better for crazy prices like $20 for a gallon of what looks to be not much more than corn and dog food .

Don't fall for it. You can go to the Dollar General and get all the DP bait you need.

Cheapest box of dry cat food at dollar general with a drizzle of used cooking oil saved from the fish fry works just fine and cost under 3 bucks.

Craziness is what it is... cat food or marshmallow and jack mack slurry.

What they said! ^^^ I just use bargain basement dry cat food and generic mini-marshmallows in the traps then sprinkle a few morsels on the ground, then squirt a little diluted Grape Jelly mixture around the trap. I don't like that sticky, hard to clean crap inside my traps!!! Later on, in colder weather I'll sometimes drizzle a little Fish Oil around to bring them in! Works for me!

Dog food soaked in anti-freeze
Marshmellows
Salty Jack Mack
Freezing is your enemy. It is amazing how them coons go straight to the source and reach right in. Jack mack is the best-IMO but it gets nasty if you have some warm days. Bacon grease is a magnet but it draws non-target too.
I get a wide mouth jug and fill with catfood and add jack mack and tuna and bacon grease and RV anti-freeze and pour it how I want. If it is cold out then I bring it in at night and if it is hot then I keep it out of the sun.

Every time I have used tuna or jackmack I always end up catching lots of possums and a skunk or two , that's why I tend to go for a sweet bait . I have also mixed up a peanut butter , bbq sauce , molasses , maple syrup mix to put on top to keep the rain off the marshmellows .

Coons and possums like the same thing. Usually a possum is not smart enough to reach in and just roll the trap around.

Maybe it's luck or grinners don't care for grain. Last year i switched from cat food and bacon grease to a berry flavored protein deer feed and cracked corn. A buddy bought a bunch for his feeders, anyway, i use a squirt of fish oil on the ground and a handfull of that mixture in the DP. I did not catch a single grinner after switching.

I must just have smart possums because I caught probably 2 coons to 1 possum the year I used fish . Every body tell you buy a pull only trigger to keep it from happening but that was all I was running at the time. I do well with my sweet baits (with push or pull triggers) ,probably going to try a couple other thing now that I have accumulated Quite a few DP.

I have only caught two possums in DPs since they were invented. I made a batch of homemade hominy and soaked in anise. That worked good because regular corn is hard and jams trigger. Another thing to grab at the Dollar store is pancake syrup. I can smell it a ways off. Slobber it around.

I feed cracked corn to my chickens in the fall and winter months, along with their regular laying feed. Thinking I might buy a bag of sweet feed and try it out in DP'S. If it don't work for coon bait my chickens will enjoy the hell out of it. I could sweeten up some cracked corn with syrup or grape jelly to pace on the ground around and use straight sweet feed in the dp I'm thinkin.

Has anyone tried candy corn I have heard about it but never tried it , seem like it might work .I have been wondering about these coon grabbers are they worth the money when I use small marshmellows I usually put a big marshmellow under the trigger which servers the same purpose .

Keep it simple. A big factor on DPs is a bait that coons enjoy a second bite off. A good example of that is fish oil. Coons are lured in by the smell but it is nasty to chew. Fish and cat food and marshmallows and corn are all worthy of eating till its gone. They get caught on the second bite. I find spending more that $2 on DP bait laughable. Freezing is the next issue.
