Hey guys, it has been YEARS since I have even looked at this board let alone posted. In the meantime I have kinda transitioned from a trapper to a coon hunter lol.
This year I’m thinking about just getting my hides tanned and either selling them afterwards or doing something different with them.
What tanneries do you guys recommend?

I used Sleepy Creek out of Iowa the last time. They did a pretty good job.

There was a post on here last year about tanneries. I would look at price. There are a lot of guys that do a wonderful job but charge a marvelous price. Years ago, before the internet, I mailed put up coon to Utah and the guy charged like $5 or $10. I would say tanners charge about $25 custom tan. I would also say you can buy tanned coon all day for $25. I saw a tannery on Rte 44 as soon as you hit Oklahoma. Theres a place down at Hermitage.

I got on my tanning site and asked who commercially tanned. A fellow in Oklahoma rep Attachment Deletedlied with his prices. This will give you a flavor of cost. I think he is fair on his prices.

Ive had Sleepy Creek Tannery, Wellsburg, Iowa, do mine the last 4 years. Several hundred skins. Excellent job, and the best prices Ive found. The place at Hermitage,Mo. was way too high priced at 35.00 each for every single skin, rats to beaver.

Been looking on the web for a cheap tannery. Yeah ,I can tan a hide and make something but I got a lot of work in it and don't want to sell it. Moyles is coming in as the best deal around. It is 20 bucks to tan a coon but if you have 100 hides it is $10 per hide. My thought was a few trappers could pool their resources and ship 100 hides. Drawback I see is who gets what if they come back. Maybe there is a way to tattoo a number or place a tag that stays on.

If you are going to have Moyles tan them be prepared for a long wait. All the tanneries seem to have a big backlog.

I noticed that on their website. I would say it takes a couple weeks for the process and the rest is waiting your turn.

www.tubariltd.com/ gets good ratings on other forums, along with Moyles and Sleepy Creek Said to be the very best by some that have used him. And this guy has been mentioned a few times; A & L Berg, Inc. (973) 353-9000.

Yup....I look for tanneries all the time on google. They all seem to cater to the trophy hunter who thinks money is no object to get what he wants. I would imagine it would suck to own a commercial tannery. The EPA and OSHA would be all over their arse. "What is in this vat?" "Oh nothing just sulpheric acid" "How do you dispose of it" "Oh we just dump it out back...." "What do you do with all your hide scrapings?" "We dump them out back and spotlight varmits trying to eat it" Yeah, that raises their costs I am sure.....

I think a lot more Trappers are tanning their catch, hoping to sell on E-Bay, rather than take a beating at auction.
