what would be best to do if i wanted trap a few rats and keep till next year, cant put them up or do much with them this year. (no place to do it ). thanks .

It's a lot less space taken up if you skin first. If you want the meat for bait, don't even worry about freezing it,just preserve it. The only thing I would freeze whole would be a taxidermy quality specimen.

Skin them and wrap in 3 layers of newspaper then vacuum seal. No worrys

well my wife wont let me trap this year so im going to have to settle for 2 or 3 rats, im going to try and brain tan them. i have a pond across the field from me with several runs in it. man its been 2 years since i trapped anything other than rabbits.

Skin them and freeze them and be done with it. If the wife doesn't allow trapping then I don't understand where you got 3 rats. I wouldn't post that on the internet.

its not that she wont let me trap at all, ive trapped for over 30 years. i had a quadruple bypass back in september thats why she doesnt want me to trap hard. but i cant take much more of doing much of nothing .lol..

I see......walking would be good for you but hauling a beaver up a 50 ft bank might be pushing it.

yeah thats why i want to go after rats ha ha ha , this sucks cause last year i coudnt trap cause i had a bad back and finally surgery in jan. then in sept had heart surgery. maybe this comming season ill make it out there.

yeah it did sound like she was a peta person lol.. ive been watching videos on how to brain tan and other ways to do it, im just trying to find something to keep me busy . i did pick up 6 doz 1 1/2 dukes from my cuz, been playing around with them getting ready to sell them. most have never been set .

Well, that 4x bypass explains it. I guess she really loves you and wants you around. LOL
Gotta take care of yourself and heal for a while. You'll get back a little at a time. Don't push it. You could have said the wife "doesn't want me to trap" in lieu of "won't let me trap." Regardless, I hope you're doing better and your heart and health get much stronger.

We use lard for our brain tan. Works great, and less mess by a bunch.

well one of my boys went with me and we caught 2 beavers and 2 rats. couldnt resist . lol.. he did most of the work.but im going to do one with hog brains and the other with alum, already got the alum going . have to wait till thursday to get the hog brains.

Not trying to one up you or any thing like that .Ihad a heart tansplant 4/28/14 and was trappin beavers that winter . Needless to say my doc and wife wasn't impressed but they said I healed up faster than most .I contribute that to the desire to live, and that means every waking minute of your life! You never know when you wont wake up! so do it now tomorrow it may be illegal. Don't take this wrong I still have bad days even now almost 4 years later |
