This will be my first trapping season approaching. I'm wanting to try for a little bit of everything except maybe otters and beaver. I was going to put an assorted order in with Lennons, but I would like some advice as to what the essentials would be. Any help is appreciated.

There are several good ones. I'd say start with a few curiosity lures maybe some gland lures for later in the season. Don't forget your urine, there's that as well. Bait is another thing. Keep it simple, keep good detailed records and don't over crowd your set with a bunch of smell and you'll find out what works best for you on your line. What are your targeted species. Some lures work great for multiple species others not so well. Just get several different lures so the critters aren't smelling the same thing at every hole they come across. I'm still learning myself what works best for me. Good luck this season, have a blast and watch your fingers.

Thanks for the input! I plan on keeping a log for sure. I'm going to target cats, yotes, fox, coons, and there is a small spring fed creek that runs through the property where I'll make some rat and mink sets. Super excited! Definitely will have some fox and cat urine to start the season, but planned on harvesting any other as I go. What do you think?

Save your money and don't bother buying cat urine. Cats are attracted to fox urine just fine. If and when you catch a cat, milk the bladder urine for use but don't bother buying any.

Nice. That's what I was curious about. So, from what I gather, Fox urine will work for any of my predator sets? Any lure recommendations? Planning on bait and fish oil for my DP's. My rat sets will mostly be bottom edge sets. What about my mink boxes? Muskrat meat and mink urine or just mink gland lure?

I have never caught anything on Lennon lure . In this state or pennsylvania . You cannot go wrong with fox hollow .if you can go to the missouri convention in Chillicothe , you will find dealers and demos sept 19 20th .

Thanks for the input! I'll try some of these others. Should I get some gland lures for each type of animal I want to target? Or is there one that might make most curious enough to check it out?

Get a 'cat gland and fox gland and call it good. Get an LDC lure (Gusto!). Forget "food" lures (why?). Urine is the best "lure" of them all, and like BB said, milk 'em all for good, fresh pee.
Keep it simple.
You would be a good candidate for attending our trappin' School this winter, too.

hawbakers has good stuff too... don't use the same lure at every set.... don't overload the property ur trappin on... Hawbaker retired and sold the business to folks that have no access to his old suppliers. He used to make great lure as did his father. A gland lure and good red fox urine will catch a lot critters. Can't say where to get either; I always used Hawbaker's but I know that Winkler can't possibly reproduce it. And the source of that urine only sells 5 gallons @ $250 and you have to go there. For bait Cletis Richards' Apple Road or Rich Kasper's bait will work for most fur bearers. You can't go wrong with any castor based lure, imo.

Thanks for the tips Dale! When and where is the school this year? I could only find last year's dates in the upcoming events thread.
