Well we ended up getting more rain yesterday than they had previously called for so it looks like a day of remakes but it'll be worth it. Temps are at 12 degrees and dropping with 20 to 25 mph winds so I may don my bibs on for the first time this year. Man I hate wind!
This is the kind of weather that'll have our cats and coyotes moving and put the possums, skunks, and coon back in the dens.
Already seeing boar coons fighting and rubbed(turned 2 big boars loose yesterday due to being rubbed).and have the last week to 10 days. Earliest I can remember this happening but with low coon numbers ,may just be Mother Natures way of helping rebound next year.

Ended up with 2 coyotes and a possum. One coyote and the possum were caught before it got cold enough to freeze the sets and the traps were a football size frozen clod on them. The other coyote came from a cable restraint and didn't have any frozen mud on him at all, even though he was caught in a path next to the creek.
Pulled some sets that hadn't produced, remade all the rest, and even managed to hammer in a couple more. Since I use a fairly deep stepdown there was still mud under the frozen top layer causing wet cold gloves. lol
Wasn't but a skiff of snow on and showed signs of coyotes checking out sets after they froze in.
Would really be nice to trap in that dry dirt that Cletis always manages to. lol

Gonna be a brutal day out there today. Temps are 10 degrees now dropping with a 30 mph wind and gusty.
Anyone out today should take care not to get frostbite as it can happen pretty quickly. I had both thumbs frostbite years ago and the circulation in them isn't the best anymore. I don't realize they have gotten too cold until I get into the warmth and by then they have turned blue and are throbbing.lol
Calvin, out of the 17 sets I remade that day I had 2 coyotes and a red fox the next day. I had thought about pulling the set that had the fox and now I'm glad I didn't lol.

Keep us posted John. It/s good to hear those are still trapping. I pulled a lot of sets this fall (listening to the weatherman) and still regret doing it today (as he was wrong everytime). I Took a conservative/fun approach to trapping this year in the light of suspected fur prices and weather conditions...and I regret it. Below zero up here now with a stout wind. Closed schools as 35-40 below windchills. I got cold enough just walking out to the shop to stoke up the woodstove to do some skinning. Yeah, I/m turning into a big girl the older I get, it seems. I should go look for one of my woman's "pads" in the bathroom cabinet.... Maybe that will warm me up abit.

LOL Calvin. I've worked my whole life outdoors and the cold doesn't really bother me much, hate the heat though. It isn't so much the cold as it's that 30 mph wind that'll hurt ya I place most of my sets as I have to face north to remake them. That puts that wind right in your face and by the time you dispatch then remake the set that truck cab feels good. Deer throwing traps in a couple spots I have cat sets is getting old though.

I set my first serious sets today! Yay! Love this cold weather. Keeps the lightweights home and the possums and coons and skunks all holed up! The real critters never hole up! They are out for a meal! Cletis's ole apple road will slay them tonight along with a little of Big bad John's beaver castor and some good ole fashion red fox piss!! Great time to be trapping unless, of course, it too cold!! haha! NEVER TO COLD TO HAVE FUN!!!!
