I got coni shy beaver. Been trapping ths hole since season started I started using snares. Every time I check the snare is still connected to wire but loop is shut. I'm about 3 inches off bottom and have shrunk loop to 6 in. Or so. Any ideas?

If you've been trapping the same "hole" this whole time, good luck. I'm not good enough to help you out here, not at all. Beaver get SMART. Really smart...

Maybe the wind keeps shutting the loop. Try adjusting the set up so the lock is a little more on the back side of "Top Dead Center".

First off snares have to be completely submerged so that rules out wind shutting them. If you are using CRs then you have to have the bottom of the loop 6 inches of the ground to be legal. Too high to catch a beaver on dry ground

Sooooo... (I've NEVER had THIS thought before). What about a CR in the WATER?

Much easier to work within the regs than to try to get around them. Cheaper too if a warden checks on you.

Does it say in the regs that CR's have to be on dry soil? I haven't looked.

Nope sure doesn't but the regs imply use for taking K-9s and cats,so I'd say a game warden would treat it as if it were a snare. I'd say most GW would issue a citation,so why risk it? If a person wants to snare beaver, then they should learn to do it right.

So a CR, set in the water, wouldn't be "right"? Just discussing. I'd bet, Clay notwithstanding, that most Agents wouldn't know the difference.

Oh I don't know about that Dale. We have quite a few GW that trap here in central and north Mo.One only has to read the regs to see that CRs aren't for use in the water. Like a guy told me once....."Being right isn't always easy but is always right".

I think since snares require a deer stop (why??), the only differance from a CR would be the BAD, loop size, entanglement and location. Didn't look it up but don't recall any prohibition of BAD on snares. I think a CR set under water would be a snare. Not the wind but could be water current or trash or vertical positioning. Since I don't normally use either my oppinions are likely worthless.
That discusion aside, I'd give that "hole" a rest. Unless it's a "remove all" contract, time is better spent on critters that are still ignorant of traps and trappers.

the 660 super bears really shine in this situation... the larger opening will usually take them even shy's

DW, maybe he is doing a complete extraction... most of the beaver work I have done was that way... especially in small ponds in momma's back yard
