This was on the news the other day for our area. Wouldn't this make the quality of fur better.

Not cold weather that dictates the quality of fur, but the photo period. Shorting of daylight in a day. Here we go again!

Lots less available sunlight! 6 months of NO sun at all. Which, of course is why it's a lot colder up there.

If cold weather dosent have anything to do with it why does Alaska have better fur quality than Alabama? because they evloved better fur to handle the -40 weather regularly. That's kinda how evolution works. Doesn't get that cold in alabama.

Why does northern missouri have better quality fur than southern missouri?

I would say a matter of genetics and availability of food. Northern Mo always has plenty of food. Acorn crop is the major force for southern coon.

Natural Selection takes time but climates usually change very slowly over time. Our present climate situation is catching lots of plants and animals with their metaphorical pants down! haha Diet also has a huge impact on fur quality. This year the fur is extremely healthy in our parts. Never seen so much fat on the deer and furbearers down here.

If cold weather dosent have anything to do with it why does Alaska have better fur quality than Alabama? Ever see a fox or coyote in the middle of summer or late winter? if that same fox or coyote waited till cold weather to put on a winter fur they would freeze, they dont put it on in one night. Same with shedding winter fur, lengthening of photo period is what triggers them to start shedding.
