The "live clinic" that Jim Homan and I have been talkin' about has taken on a whole new look...
Instead of a clinic, it'll be more like the FTA Trappers College held every September in Indiana. It will feature class-room sessions with a fairly strict schedule, unlike a lot of the demos we do. Plans are still in the works, but I figure we need to get the word out before we run out of time. Now for the details we DO have-
Date- December 26-28, 2014
Location- Dubbert Auction Center 34947 Marriott Ave. Fortuna MO 65034
Eligibility- Trappers who want to learn to better their skills and increase their enjoyment of the game. While any skill level will be accepted, we really want newer trappers with just a few seasons, or less, under their belts. Make sense? Class limited to 20 folks, with some restrictions. Read to the bottom to find out the rest.
Cost- Free to all students who are members of the Fur Takers of America, with donations accepted (if you are not a member of the FTA, your membership and dues will be accepted on-location with prior agreement to do so). Meals will be provided, as will sleeping facilities. Students will NOT be roughing it much at all.
Itinerary- Classroom discussion and lessons, ethics, trap modification, cable restraints, species-specific discussions, and live on-the-line training for both land and water animals, including trap setting (by students with current MO trapping permits), dispatches, skinning, fleshing and fur-handling demos every evening. Other stuff will be added as we think this thing through.
Help needed- Instructors with an ability to speak clearly and concisely to students, and with a well-rounded knowledge of trapping. Strong ethics a must. And no, we're not payin'.
Everyone can help pitch-in with the cooking and "camp" duties, right? After all, this thing will be free.
We're accepting 20 students, BUT folks that can attend all three days take precedence. If we have less and can fill in different days with different students then that's what we'll do. We do reserve the right to refuse any student, based on our stipulations above. This event is by invitation only.
That's a start. We'll do our best to answer questions. Contact me first (Jim is goin' trappin', dang it).

If anyone else is interested in any of the days mentioned, let me know. The Holidays are obviously hurting us some, but we'll make a showing. I don't know anywhere else you can get personal instruction, hands-on clinics, specialized demos, and food and board, FOR FREE.

I've been sick as a dog, but I plan on sending info out this weekend about this event. We ARE taking day-trippers (because of the Holiday) but I HAVE to know if you're going to be there to plan on food, etc. This thing will cost you nothing- it's on me this time.
We will be a running a real trap line, setting traps, HOPEFULLY doing remakes (!), animal dispatches, troubleshooting, trapline management, etc. Students with a valid MO license CAN set their own properly-tagged traps. I haven't had a chance to look the property over yet, but intend to tomorrow. I'll know more then, hence the info being sent out this weekend.
Other activities will include C.R. work, in-depth species-specific discussions, classroom discussions, trap modification, skinning and fur put-up, fur tanning, box and cage trapping, DP stuff, ethics, MDC rules and regs, etc. Students will be given plenty of time throughout the day for breaks, and evenings should be a fun mix of food, fellowship, and I won't forget to bring several decks of cards for the brave hearts.
We may not catch a critter, but if ya'll go away without learning something this weekend then you weren't listening.
Contact me with any questions via PM's, or you can email me at ozarktrapper@yahoo.com

A MDC- Certified Cable-Restraint Class will be held at this function Saturday at 1:30. It will be exclusive of the school, although students can take the course and not jeopardize any schooling. We DO need conformation if you plan on taking the class.

Dates- Dec. 26th-28th. Location- Dubbert Auction Center 34947 Marriott Ave. Fortuna MO 65034 Times- Beginning 9am on the 26th. After that we'll play it by ear.
First off, thanks for your interest. We're going to do our best to give each and every one of you attending an information-filled and enjoyable weekend. Although we're very experienced at doing demos and clinics, this is our first time at running something on this scale. So please bare with us.
WE WOULD LIKE CONFIRMATION ON WHO IS COMING, AND HOW MANY FOLKS YOU ARE BRINGING, ASAP (names would be nice again to remind us who you are). And what days you plan on being here would be helpful also.
We intend to keep folks busy- however we also don't want to burn anyone out. We'll provide free time and breaks as often as possible. Again, we'll be playing with the format as this thing evolves, and we welcome comments and suggestions.
Non-trapping family members or spouses are welcome, and would be appreciated as help in cooking!
What you need to bring-
Sleeping items (cots, bedding, sleeping bags, etc.)
Toiletries (there are no showers, but we will have hot water and plenty of privacy for folks needing to spruce up)
MINIMUM- knee boots are the bare minimum. Hip waders and waders are fine.
Clothing- You can never have enough . Bring plenty of warm clothing, gloves and socks. Headwear will be important also. Sometime over this weekend it WILL be cold and wet. Too many warm clothes will not be an issue.
A Missouri Trapping Permit if you intend to actually handle traps on the 'line.
Traps, setting equipment- We want students to be able to set some traps for themselves, although we do need to limit it to a few DP's and footholds, and a couple bodygrips if you want to trap water. CR's for CR-legal trappers are fine too.
Fur put-up equipment- we'll have a large fur shed that will house a lot of folks, with equipment ready-to-use. However, if you want to bring your own tools, portable beam, etc., bring them.
Notebook, recording device, camera, etc. Hopefully we'll have enough information for you that you'll need them.
Food, snacks- We'll do our best to keep you fed, but you may have something you prefer for yourself. Or if you want to share, we'll appreciate it!
A folding camp chair may be a good idea, but it's not necessary.
Itinerary-
Again, this will be a work in progress. But after a short orientation Friday we'll go run some traps we'll already have set. We'll then begin set-making demos and go skin any critters we may have caught. After lunch we'll allow student to also set some traps, and this should take us through the day. This same scenario will continue Saturday, and we'll pull traps Sunday morning.
Friday evening will consist of supper, followed by some classroom instruction and a Q&A session. After we're done we may play cards, or whatever. If the weather is nice enough we may build a campfire outside and visit around it. There will be no set bedtime.
Saturday and Sunday morning we'll have breakfast before heading out. We won't start extra-early, but we should be checking traps before 9am or so. Back to (hopefully) skinning, and classes throughout the day on specific topics and a presentation by the local MDC agent.
Some topics we'll be covering-
Species-specific discussion Trap modification Set location & theory Cage and box trapping Cable-Restraints (a MDC-Certified CR class will be held at 1:30 Saturday) Dispatching and handling non-target catches Bait & lure use Ethics Fur handling Hide tanning And more.
Saturday evening we may do a fish fry. Then more discussion & Q&A's.
Sunday morning we'll pull traps after breakfast, handle catches (?) and hopefully fill-in on anything we missed.
RULES
We don't want to overburden anyone, but we also want everyone to get the most out of this possible. For this reason, unless pets can be left tied up at our central location we're going to have to ask you to leave them at home. Younger children may also find this to be a long ordeal, but we're not saying to leave them at home. Kids are every welcome if they can handle several hours of instruction.
Students will sign a waiver before we begin.
THIS EVENT IS BY INVITATION ONLY, AND IS FREE OF CHARGE TO THOSE THAT ARE INVITED. The only thing we'll require is that students who are not already a member of the Fur Takers of America must sign up. Dues are $30 per year, and more information is available at furtakersofamerica.com. You will be able to join up at the school.
I hope I've got it all covered. If you have questions, email me at ozarktrappper@yahoo.com or give us a call.
