What do you do? Just burn a bunch of oak, save the ashes and mix with water to boil. I could burn in my wood stove and scoop the ash out later. I've been burning hickory and walnut and saved that ash for melting snow, about 3 five gallon buckets.

I done power washed mine and waxed them. Went through a lot of salt and calcium chloride this winter and I hate to have them rusting all summer.

It is critical to soak them DPs and scrub the insides out. Especially if you used jack mack. I threw all mine in a tub of water on Jan 31 and the tub froze. When it thaws then I will go through each one. At least they are soaking for now.

The wood ashes(hardwood makes the best)and water mixture is kinda like how lye is made. Generally water is leached thru the ashes thus giving you lye.Depending on how many times you leach the water thru, how much ashes used, and how soft the water is you use, will determine the strength of your lye. Carefull though as it can cause chemical burns to the skin.

Been round and round making lye. A 55 gal barrel of ash makes a spoonful of lye. I just use a spoonful of Lewis lye out of a can from the grocery store.
Wille-Propane is $17 at Caseys...20# exchange....Sorry but I had to say that....

So krank your saying it's cheaper and easier to buy lye. I've never made it from ash. I know it cleans well though. I'll have to try and find some. I've got a 55 gallon plastic barrel cut in half that I use for soaking. How much lye to water about do you use?
