Now that my first successful season is over and I've learned a lot it's time to start planning for next season. As I finish putting up fur I started thinking of trap prep. I've got a half dozen Duke 1.75 and a half dozen Duke no.2s that I used for coyote and cat sets. The 1.75 held a cat earlier this year and I suffered several pull outs the rest of the year. My plan is to base plate, change pan bolts and center swivel. I use 15 inch cable stakes or long chain drags but am at a loss as to what to do after the center swivel. Do i add more swivels or shock springs or chain. Just wondering how some of the others do it. Please anybody feel free to help out. I was gonna night latch but can't due to filling down the pan notch. The dog only catches about 1/8 of an inch in the notch.

Three swivels is a must have in my opinion... the chain setup I use Good chain & three swivels with a total length of around 12in.

You even replace the type of chain to. Looking at stock chain I can see how a coyote could crush the links and cause them to come apart. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the picture.

Are you using the J hook to hold the quick link? I usually just J hook my cable stake to the swivel. I'm new though so if there's an advantage I'd like to hear about it. The only problems I've had with attaching cables is when using S hooks, sometimes the swivel gets turned and pulls the hook open. Luckily I've never lost a trap or catch due to it. I always caught the problem and soon did away with S hooks.

J hooking a quick connect prior the the earth anchore provides you with 2 advantages. 1st off, after you make a catch, and if that catch puts bad joo joo to your trap, you can change the trap out without pulling the earth anchore. 2nd off, at the end of the season, you can disconnect the trap and leave the earth anchore there for the next season. And 3rd off (this is a bonus), you can pre set your earth anchores on your line before the season, then hit your line when season starts, and all you have to do is hook your trap to the earth anchore with a quick connect.

That makes sense. It also keeps from having to carry a J hook tool. Thanks for the input guys it'll give me something to think about and do the rest of the Winter waiting on work to start up.
