243 100gr deer loads will put a baseball sized hole into the pelt. 22-250 or 243 with varmit loads will be good. For my 243 I reload hornady 58 gr v-max bullets. I have no experience with a 22-250

Most any high-velocity centerfire round will damage a pelt, especially if you hit a bone, and ESPECIALLY if you hit the bone at an acute angle. My .204's have done the best of any caliber I've ever used, and I've used a bunch of them. I also like a .22 mag. Many times I pack a shotgun, and hardly ever use buckshot.

I used to be timid about shooting a big gun at yotes but anymore I shoot them and worry about pelt later. Since I got into 243s, I see they shoot further and do less damage than a 22/250. Dad always used a .218 bee which is a tad hotter than a hornet. I think the .204 was made for coyote. My 17 centerfires are great but intolerant of wind. An old timer showed me that #4 buck is much better than 00 as far as a dense pattern that still killed. Alot of deer hunters down south have gone to #4 buck too. Heres a good tip- All that old BB and #2 is setting on the gunstore shelfs and nobody buys it. Cant use it for turkey or waterfowl. Make him an offer.

the 22-250 is exilant if you can load it with a 70 gr speer point an slow it down a bit like to 2200-2300 fps wont tear them up sow much. or go with a 270 Winchester you can by 110gr spear point it will buck the wind you can put in 140gr for deer its a 250yd killer walla one of the best for gotten all round calibers.I have a Remington pump clip fed I"ts bad to the bone.

I shoot 17 Remington fireball and 20 tactical but those are handload only I would recommend 223 kills coyotes no problem and little easier on cat and fox than 22-250 also good on deer with proper shot placement I try and stay away from soft nose bullets then tend to be hard on fur most ballistic tips not bad I either use varmint grenades or hornady ntx there all gilding metal bullets work like Barnes but not as long for weight very little pelt damage with those bullets and 223 ammo available almost every were

You are a hoot, Krank! Always enjoy your words!
Wish I could see you at Laurie this year but can't make it. Come visit sometime for a few days and we'll kick back and share a few stories and sip my last bit of shine I forgot to take to my Family get together last month! haha
you would like it down here in these parts! We might even end up with a dead elk hanging up in the Fur Shed and not remember how we got it! Million dollar elk would taste good cooked rare on the grill! haha

If we get an elk then I want the hide. Deerhide is a tad thin for Mocassin soles. Cowhide don't wear well. Years ago them Kansas hunters shot yote with FMJ. Not safe or legal these days. Anything is a good coyote load. Shoot them and go see what it did. A little gun might do alot of damage and a big gun might not do any damage.

My buddy had an young elk get hung up in his fence this year and die! But, conversation dept. made it their first and he never even had a chance to see it. But, they told him about it!! It must have had one of those collar things on em. I hope the hillbillies don't try to cook those collars and eat em! haha Won't be long and we will be sending you some MO elk hide, Krank. They are getting thick down here and need to be thinned before a family hits an 800 pounder on the highway and the patrol gets there befor the pistol packers can do a clean up!! Great to have elk, but there are gonna be some serious dilemmas occur that will put the conversationalists looking for someone else to do the talkin!! Probably a fancy lawyer that we ar paying for!!

Krank thanks for the advice I will see if I get the chance. Can't wait to be able to shoot elk in Mo You'll have to have some special talents if you plan to get to tag for elk. Nothing that you will wanna do, I am sure! haha But, landowners will be shooting the heck out of them and telling conversation about them like we report 100% (1%) of the mountain lion encounters!! If they could see all the the deer camera and cell phone pics, we would all be in jail!! haha Like Colonl Klink always said, "I know nothing!!" We live in the information world!!!! haha!! But no body knows nothing!!! Oops that means we all know everything!!

270 is great for coyote no head shots though usually small enter exit hole I used one for years and great for long shots stopped using it when my first bobcat came in and blew him in half at 20 yards

Read a disturbing article about this whole elk thing. Author speculated that the average guy will never get to pull the trigger but he gets to fund the project as a taxpayer. The limited amount of tags to cull herds will go to doctors and lawyers and politicians who have an inside track. I have shot coyotes with .45 black powder before.(during BP season) It does no damage as it isnt moving fast. I shot a fox with a 12 guage round ball and it did less damage that a 22 center fire. Just put a 3/4 " round hole in him with no drama or trauma.
