What effect do we think this move to Helsinki Finland will have on our fur if sent to FHA? Good, bad, indifferent? Will having FHA, American Ledgend and Saga all at the same time/place affect NAFA prices/movement?

I think it may be strategic in going to the buyers but I got mixed emotions about putting that many miles on my fur. It would be real nice cramming that in the hold of the ship and them getting hot or wet. Don't like it.....

I trust that Jim but what if I get dinged on the grade because the hair slipped before they graded it?

Jim, how does that work; insurance is at top lot value, average value or a flat rate per pelt?
The additional time to pack and ship to Saga must result in earlier last receiving dates, I'd think, although I couldn't find those on the website.
Also saw a post on Tman that one of the bigbest Chinese fur importers was in jail and in trouble with his government. Throw in that with high prices last season bringing out many fair weather fur harvesters, maybe a high harvest, makes me wonder about it.

I trust that Jim but what if I get dinged on the grade because the hair slipped before they graded it? Only reason the hair would slip would be ifit wasn't properly put up in the first place. A grader would have most likely caught it before slipping. I guarentee,if those graders get a pelt with an off smell,it's going to be downgraded or thrown out to keep from ruining any other pelts in the stack.

So if they threw the hide in a transport container and parked it in customs for a week in the sun and it roasted in there then that's no problem as long as I fleshed it good????Don't know how real of a scenario that would be but I can imagine that if going overseas.....

Come on Mike,I'm sure they're going to do everything to insure the best environment of whatever container or method they use to ship overseas. The bottom line would be any pelts that weren't properly handled ,before it gets to them, would be the only ones in danger of slipping. They aren't going to risk a whole bale of fur over one pelt.
The insurance that Jim speaks off,has nothing to do with the quality of put-up.It would be more of a lose, fire, theft ,or such. They're not going to pay for lose due to poor or improper put-up.
I think tjm's thought are more on line of what effect on the marketing of the furs.
I would assume first that FHA would have to add a higher shipping cost to the sellers fur,due to it being sent closer to the end buyer than when sold on this side of the ocean. Before, the buter bought here then they payed to get it overseas. Now it would be the sellers turn at shipping cost.

It is a bold stratagy for sure. I just wish they owned the fur rather than me when going overseas. I buy and sell product to foreign countries (at work) and there is no end to what can happen (screw ups)on the shipment and its always "nobodies fault".

Don't you spect that they would ship by air? Time is important for these events.

We are in virgin territory handing them hides over to FHA to export to sale. Time will tell. I have no idea now what I will have and who I sell it to.

I'm wondering more how it will affect the rest of the market, combined with the Chinese confisticating a zillion pieces of fur on their smuggling deal.

The skinny at the Rondy was that this was a huge and bold move that would have very positive results.

Sounds like a sound marketing move. The may even give NAFA a run for their money doing it.The newly blossoming economy of China,Russia, and Korea would benefit from making this available to the smaller companies there, many that couldn't afford the cost of coming here tobid. This would allow them to offer more for the fur as they would be eliminating one extra step.Could be a big win for FHA and trappers alike.

I will guarantee FHA has thought out every possible scenario of what could go wrong and I'm sure they made the decision based on those scenarios. If the Con's outweighed the Pro's I can guarantee FHA would not be making such a bold move.
Could there possibly be a container that goes bad , Sure there is. Although a truckload of fur picked up here being sent to NAFA could be involved in a major accident taking peoples lives and the driver was at fault. I guarantee that the truck would be impounded and it won't move for at least a month or more and I guarantee the Law Enforcement Agencies don't care what's in the truck that might have issues. Would NAFA insure that truckload for Top Lot price. I highly doubt it.
It's all in the trust you have to place in others if your shipping them to Auction.
