I know I did a nice job on your coon , however 2500 coon is a big number and I'm convinced no matter what they say , buyers get a harsher grade than trappers !!! Good luck my good friend !!! Durham, NAFA graders don't know or even care where the pelts come from or even know who sent them, they all get graded equal and the same no matter who's pelts they are. The thing about it is, "A TRAPPER" don't have "A FUR BUYER'S" quantity of fur that they send in, so a trapper will take more time in a quality job on their pelts then a fur buyer that has many hands putting up their pelts.

Your coons are already mixed up with 400 other peoples coons when they are graded.
All pelts are bar coded (have a bar code stapled to the face of the pelt and are sized by Mexicans and sorted into bins of the same size before they are graded.
The grader has no idea who owns the coons or where they came from other than from his knowledge of what the fur looks like.
Been there and watched these coons being graded many times.

So, after they are graded, are they lotted into like grades and then auctioned??? I looked and some of my "lots" say 1600 pelts... I reasonably assumed that is the way they are auctioned....

Exactly Don. If there are 1600 pelts in a lot and that lot is sold for $10, then each pelt is baught for $10. So that buyer just paid $16,000 for that lot, not just for $10.

But then again, there might be several lots sold at the same time, not just one lot at a time.

I got some frustration and I am going to figure it out. I have sold coon that had bullet holes and tick bites and were half-hearted scraped and they graded select and I got twice what I expected. I have seen other hide that were scraped as clean as a whistle and no holes and bright fur and they were deemed "damaged". I dont get it but I will figure it out. I am second year on NAFA. I do enjoy putting up fur and will stay on it. I have sold for years to country buyers and learned quick what they liked and didnt like. Nafa is a "silent" buyer. The only way to learn is keep on trying. BTW-NAFA still has a higher average than local buyers.

X2 on that, as said early , it is very hard to figure out exactly what they want ,all we can do is keep doing like we have been doing and hope for the best..... I can not figure out the otters , I sent 12 in and had 4 graded singed, all off them was handled and put up the same way, so go figure .....

I think singed means the guard hairs are curled up at the end.

Don't worry about the otter singe. (obviouslly do everything you can when handling the pelt to avoid causing it).
A couple of years ago before the market tanked on otter I had a singed otter top the sale for $210. Framed that toplot certificate and put it on the wall for a year. Then the following February my otter AVERAGED $196, then in May, they sold about 20% of them for $110 and took three years to sell the remaining otter, the last ones brought $40.

It would be nice if we could see this trend carry over to coon!
Right now there is a real demand for semi heavy and flat fox that can be used to make garments out of. The heavies are to heavy to make a complete garment out of and are mainly used for trim. We witnessed this in the 80s.
