They are good to go right out of the box. Perfectly tuned traps cast jaws, machine chain, base plated D ring center 3 swivels. Great all around traps.

There's stuff that can be done to help them- it's just not needed for most folks.
I am, however, not most folks.

I was at the WI 50th Annual Trappers Convention last weekend and a very well known trapper mentioned to me with the 550's that there is a dead spot before the pan where a coyote can step and not set it off, so be sure to put a real small stick or stone as a guide close to the front jaw to get the critter to step deep enough and dead-center the pan. This evening I took a look @ one of my 550's versus a duke 1.75 versus a bmi k-9 wolfer, and I guess I don't see where there is that big of a gap. However, with my ridiculously limited experience, I take anybody's advice on any of this stuff.

the pan has a slight burr on them. file the bottom side. look at the dog. that's it no need for more swivels.

Not sure about that, but everyone has an opinion, never had any problems with mine, I added an extra swivel on some of mine but thats it

I've been running them for several years now and the only thing I've done to them is add a j.c. connor shock spring to middle of the chain with a swivel. No escaping if they step on that pan. If you buy them 2 coiled I would recommend cutting off the excess spring pin to prevent an animal from catching a chain link on it and disabling your swiveling action at the trap. Make sure to leave about a half inch or so of the pin, and file or grind it off so there's no sharp edges on it.
