Got my issue in the mail(Spring 2013). Had some things in there I didn't know. Good article on belly fur on cats and yotes. Also a thorough explanation of "Grade III" and how it means "loss of hair" and aint always the handlers fault. I didn't know the "Western Coyote" and "Eastern Coyote" has nothing to do with how far West they are caught but is based on the light or dark color.

I'd like to see that artical printed in more Magazines than just the NAFA Magazine.

Agreed Troy. Most trappers know little about what goes into grading fur.We do all we can to present it as well as we possibly can,but the grade is mostly the quality or color of the fur ,that we can't control.

Haven't got mine yet Krank. Hey there went the mailman, maybe I got it today.... Be right back....
Nope, maybe tomorrow... Sorry it took so long, its a 1/4 mile walk to my mail box, and up hill both ways...
Anyway, correct me if I am wrong but the color and density of the fur is the main grade of what region they get put in. I have seen (pic's) of some Canadian coyotes and they are really blond in color. Most coyotes of what I catch around here have a German Shepard coloration to them. NAFA, or should I say the buyers, like those white belly and blond backs on coyote for some reason.

Texture of the fur also ,Rod.Had a buyer show me some western silky coyotes.Snow white bellies, very pale backs, and fur as soft and silky as cat fur.Worlds of difference than our courser feeling coyotes. He also had some western cats, that would blow you away and he claimed they weren't even close to some of the better ones he buys.

So those fellas that trap other states,do they have to deliver to a nafa guy in that state or can they bring them. back to mo. and sell them with our animals?i guesss the buyer can tell the difference and pay accordingly

It dont matter Dustin....All you got to do is follow the States laws. I would surmise you may have to tag bobcat while you where in that state and some require a handwritten tag when you transport. You can sell in any State you want. For now, this is America.

i was mainly just curious if you would get the higher price for your western cats opposed to the ones yo get around here if yo sold them all in missouri.

Sure you would.....the buyer is looking at the fur and its zip code of residentcy means nothing. He would see that the bobcat from Idaho was better fur. On another note, there used to be a guy that bought fur on Saturdays in Butler (right off the square) He spread a Timber Wolf hide out on the hood of his car as an attention getter.

660, it don't matter where the pelts come from, it all depends on the grade of fur that is on those pelts. I sent 20 coon up to NAFA for the Feb auction and I had 3 different grades of regions, Western, North Central and Central and all those coon was caught within 50 miles from each other here in Missouri. To me, if you sell to a local, you are gonna get a certain price for you fur. But when you send them to the big auction, they grade them by a lot of different things, NAFA don't care where the pelt came from. You might catch a coon in the state Washington, and if it wasn't prime with good fur and color, it might be graded as a Southern coon. It all depends on the fur quality that is on the critter.
