Been finding the big reds both at Montauk and also down at lake Norfork. A lot of people say they're not safe to eat so if you're one of those save them for me.

Been finding the big reds both at Montauk and also down at lake Norfork. A lot of people say they're not safe to eat so if you're one of those save them for me. False morels, "big red" "elephant ears" or whatever you wanna call them are edible like any other poisonous mushroom. I strongly recommend you pass them up but if you eat them, cook them well to vaporize some of the poisonous chemical and do not offer them to someone you care about! I have known people who have eaten them. Some are still doing fine and others got sick on a small serving and quit eating them. They do not resemble a morel risky to mess with. Be careful! Hate to loose a great trapper from the forum. www.thegreatmorel.com/falsemorel.htmlThis site tells ya all you need to know and they believe in science. Hope it helps. There are four or five species delicious mushrooms I eat. Morels are #1 to hunt. oyster mushrooms are my favoite to eat but I do not hunt them, just run into a mess occasionally. Puffballs are delicious when fresh, and coral mushrooms, the orangish species, are delicious but there are several species. Stay away from the pinkish corals. I had a few mixed into a mess of corals a few years ago. Upset my stomach and made my wife pretty ill for about 12 hours.

I've heard you can have been eating the reds for several years, then all of a sudden they will make you sick. I've found them, but never had a hankering to eat them.I'll stick with the morels.

I've found them, but never had a hankering to eat them.I'll stick with the morels. have read that different people have different levels of the poison they can tolerate before gettiing ill or dying. Some will get ill very quickly on a small serving and others will eat them for years and maybe never get sick. Too much food in my panty to eat them.
