I saw somewhere on the web (maybe here) but can't find it again, where you need to set your pan tension to about 4# for yotes to ensure a solid and deep catch , and about 2.5# for fox & bobcats. Is this accurate? Also, is there a way to test the pan tension without buying a trap pan tension tester? I saw allot of threads about how to set the tension and night latching but none on appropriate poundages for each species. Is it also trap brand specific?

Can you explain the fire, no fire on a 2x4 to us a little more. I'm curious about this.

I have one cut to weigh a little less than I want the trap to fire.. No-fire. Then I have another that is set at the right weight, the "fire" board... the difference is about a quarter of a pound. I first set the tension at what I think it should be by feel, then I take the no fire board and ever-so-lightly place it on the pan.. the trap shouldn't fire.. then I take the fire board and ever-so-lightly place it on the pan. the trap should fire... I adjust as needed. .

That's a good tip, using the boards. Probably try that. Son is still fired up to trap something. Told him he would have to wait til next season. By then I should have a good idea on how to catch something. Guess we'll have to entertain ourselves hunting long beards for a few months.

Trkyslyr, thanks for the explanation, I was envisioning something like that just wanted to verify.
