The green knife was $45 and is SHARP. The one below it is 30 years old and dull and going strong. The rest are my shanks..... The green knife in pic I just bought from kaatz bro. like it more than my dull knife. I think you will find if you lean your beam up against wall you can get the job done faster and not have back ache later. That is the way the blue english works Kinda like this.... evertrap.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fur&action=display&thread=14325

I have 2 neckers , 1 Sheffield and 1 cheap $12 knife.
I use the neckers for almost everything. I do use the Sheffield on really big beaver. I use the cheap knife for Rats , Mink , Ect.
The key to it like Bigjohn said is to have a Beam that fit's your knife. My Beam fits my Necker's better than the Sheffield.
Krank , I really like the one next to the Beaver Knife. That's cool. Plenty of handle to hang on to , yet small blade. No hand cramps and able to do delicate work.

You cant really build a beam unless you got the knife as a pattern. THe exception is the PVC. That knife Troy was a putty knife until I snapped the blade off and ran it slow through the grinder.

I've never seen it done but is this how it should be? The beam with a little more curve than the knife.

joe you must spend alot of time on the computer.or at least i would have to to be able to do all the ilustrations you do.they look good. ;D ;D I don't really spend a lot of time on the computer. That pic took about 5 min. to make. I've saved lots and lots of smilies to Photobucket over the years. It's easy to go there and link to what I want! It makes it more fun and interesting. At least for me anyway. I check in a lot throughout the day though! Oh, BTW. I had nothing to do with the location requirement. Just want to help the mods out when I can. This site is growing quickly. I really don't know how they can keep up with all the posts and trap too! Kudo's to them!

Trust me , being a Mod isn't all it's cracked up to be. Very thankless job.
I will be the first one to say thank you to them for the job they do.

The contour of the knife must compliment the contour of the beam. Other wise you will exert all force onto a tiny area and RIP the hide. And no, the knife is alot longer than the beam is wide. This allows for side motion.....No man can tell another how to flesh. It is what works for you. I see some of these hotshot videos and their setup is pitiful in my estimation. Used to know a buyer that had a two foot round log and a short tall knife made out of chunk of junk. Back in KS I seen an old man that skinned everything on a bench (no hang) and put everything on a stretching board and pecked away with a spoon and a pocket knife. Different STROKES for different folks.
