Fence Staples

Have any of you heard of using 2 inch fence staples to use if your set is next to a tree? They are supposed to be used in place of a stake.

Must of been watching F & T trapper.Johnny thorpe shows his otter set using the 2 inch staples to fasten to a tree.May work okay for an otter,but if you catch a coon,that tree might just give him a foothold for pulling out.But yes,a 2 inch staple would be very hard for an animal to pull out.

I would not use a fence staple for any kind of trapping,and i would never make an otter set using 2inch staple.When i catch an animal i want it there waiting on me.To me its almost as bad as using 14 or 11 gauge to fasten a trap.The otter Thorpe is trappin is smaller than the otter around these parts.Sure it MIGHT hold,thats not good enough for me.

How is a northern otter smaller than a southern otter? Don't know just askin....

How would you get them out of the trees?

I use staples a lot 3in works good for me You can find them at a farm and home store. I always leave a little bit of the staple showing so I can get my fencing pliers in to remove them. Staples work very good and when your in a heavy used area and someone trys to steel your trap they well have to go home and get something to get your trap out with. There not going to pull it out ether--RESOMAN--

Thorpe says that otter in his area are smaller than southern otter,and i dont use fence staples cause years ago it cost me an animal and a trap,so did single stakeing,and wire.Only has to happen to me once to learn.
