Post your location in your profile. Game fish can't be used for bait in MO.

true game fish cant be used!. but the conservation agent in my area told me that bullhead can be use as BAIT to catch flatheads. so there for you should be able to use them for trapping too. but i would get a hold of your agent in your area and make sure before you use them!!!!.

Bullheads are non game fish. Same as bluegill, which a lot of us use on the trapline.

Bullheads can be good eating, don't waste any edible parts, but you can use the scraps for sure.

Missouri says no game fish for fishing bait. Its not in the trapping section. I got an old 1920 book on catfishing. Learned a heck of a good trick for using bullhead for bait. CUT THE HORNS OFF THE BULLHEAD> Take some dikes and clip them off. That big old flathead can really swaller that down further assuring a good hook set.

Krank, are you implying that trappers can use a trout, a bass, or any other game fish for trapping bait?

Yes, from what I can tell, the rule of no game fish is in the fishing code as it pertains to fishing. Rightfully so too. I think it would be assinine for a CA to write you up in DEC for using a gamefish head for bait. Now, with that said, I invite somebody to ask the next CA they see for a clarification. meanwhile, I use bluegill and shad for whole bait and anything that swims goes in the fishoil jug.

Krank, I agree and will contact the local warden in the morning. This is a good example of needing a closer relationship with our local wardens, especially for new trappers.

I think the trapping code should spell out what is allowable for bait.
