Got a call from a friend that he had a coon problem. Went out set 7 DPs and the next morning had 6 coon. Reset during a rain that just kept getting heavier and ended up with 2 the next morning. Reset again and had 2 coon and a possum this morning. Pulled traps and told him we'd wait a week to see if it solved his problem.
They are going to cut and bale the hay around his house so I expect I'll get another call later.

I actually saw a coon eating sweet feed out of the horse trough one morning and he high tailed it before I got to a gun. Other than that my dog keeps them away. We will see when the sweet corn is ripe. Ted Nugent is posting how he is whacking and stacking coon. Says they all must die. He is also shooting blue jays and bragging about that. I know one coon is enough to make a landowner mad as hell.

These coon were tearing up plants and everything else on this guys deck. Eating all the seed out of feeders in the yard and then tearing them up if no seed in them. Timber is only about 60 yards from his yard and he has 2 big mulberry trees on his fence line.
All these coon came from setting along the fence and 7 DPs in a 50 yard stretch. They started mowing hay yesterday so I'll bet more coon will show up since it'll be easier for them to move around.

Thats where coon get themselves in trouble. They tear up things they didnt need to tear up. I had one once in my shop in a cage that I used for dog training. One night he got loose and went out the door. Before he left he had to take a dump on my workbench. Spiteful.

I never had a coon problem at the new house. Now the wife tells me theres a coon getting into the quail pen and opening the doors to the coops. It is not killing any quail so I suspect it is eating laying mash. I set a Hilltop in there with some persimmon bait. I might put out some DPs but will not stand them up. I dont want to catch a chicken and I could just see one sticking its head in there if it was standing up. This time of year, I lean towards a sweet lure. Dont want to catch no cats and dont want a stinking mess of flies.

I've got a couple of nuisance coon and a possum eating our cat food every night. I may have to do the same Krank. I don't want to catch the cats. I've never tried just laying a DP on the ground. Sounds like it should work.

There was somebody on here years ago that said he kept his grape jellies from breakfast at the diner. He used them for summer coon bait.

Caught a lot of coon using grape jelly and miniature marshmallows. I buy the cheapest stuff Dollar General has in the plastic squirt bottles.

When I was heavy into Scouts, we seem to always have old pancake syrup and buy new. I used the old for lure on coon. I can smell pancake syrup from a ways off. Meanwhile, two nights set and no catch or sign of coon. Maybe they were just rambling through...

Marshmallows in dp or live trap either will take every passing coon.

I've also had luck using fruit flavor breakfast cereal in place of the marshmallows.

The thing with DPs and cats is cats are curious. Piece of marshmallow under the trigger and a large marshmallow stuck into the mouth of the DP will keep cats from getting caught.

Just occurred to me with John mentioning the big mellow on top......I saw where people loaded the DP up with bait and put a golf ball on top. That would keep the chickens out but who the heck has a golf ball?

Meanwhile, I never caught any coon nor is there any sign they have been back. I will leave the live traps set for now with sweet bait.
