if salting them, do it fresh. the thread i read about it said salt in bottom of bucket, then a layer of fish, then cover with salt. continue layering in that manner. drain hole in bottom of bucket with a catch pan under to catch what drips, that stuff is supposed to be good.

Smash 'em up and put in a quart jar about 3/4 full. Let sit for a couple months with a slightly loose lid. Then take the lid off and push the goo down. put the lidback on for about 2 more weeks. Then skim the oil off the top. This yeilds about 2-3 ounces if done right. At least this is what i was told. I am going to give it a shot. -T-

Last year was my first year trapping. The one big thing i noticed is with the commercially available baits is some work, And some don't. I think that stuff like Urines, & some gland lures are effective, but some of the other stuff i tried, had little or no success. Making our own lures should be the ticket. They wont be knocked down with water , or whatever else they use. Plus i guess that using stuff collected from past lines, used in the same area might present familiar smell. I collected the glands from the fox & other critters i got so i can try to find something that works well. I still have not found a go to lure yet, so i am going to try a bunch of different mixtures, and keep trying to improve them. I am going to right down the % of each ingredient, and have some paper trail on what was working. Alot of folks on here have some great homemade baits and lures, so maybe 10 years from now i might actually have an idea on what I'm doing. LOL. & i'm not saying anybody's old, LOL -T-

Keep in mind that certain lures and baits are made by suppliers in certain areas. A lure that is hot stuff in the west or down south might not work worth a hoot in the midwest. If you buy something made in Florida that is made from seaweed and alligator snot, it might not work in MO. Even though every Florida coon can't resist it. Call the company and ask what works for your area. Try to buy from the company that actually makes the product. If the can't or won't tell you I'd look elsewhere. And the best lure or bait in the world won't work if it's not on location.
