I currently have 2 dozen mb550's I am thinking of picking up another 1/2 dozen. Been reading about the KB's. any thoughts on those? My 550's are closed jaw, I did have 4 pull outs this year which was unusual.

I,ve just 2 of the MB550 that I won from the MDC skull survey. I absolutely hate them. Don't get me wrong, they are a very strongly built trap but they just don't work for me. I've had more misses with those two traps than any I've used.

Willie I'm not sure why I've had my problems with the 550. I've never used the KB so I can't comment on it.
I guess it's just the fact I've used my Northwoods so long that it's just 2nd nature for me to set, bed them' and go.

made up more of my favorite predator trap. I am a big believer in offset jaws for land trapping........ Used a lot of traps, through they years was a sterling mj600 User for many years great trap! yet a process led me to this route over a period of years and for the money these are my choice for land trapping predators.

Everyone has a trap and/or set-up that works best for them. The only way to find out is to use it a season or two.

No they don't make the Northwoods but the Bridgers are basically the same trap. I'm going to trade the 2 550s for 3 #3 Bridgers or Northwoods. Should be an even trade cost wise.

Big john do you like dogless or not?

All my traps are dog on. Never used the dogless so I'm not sure how they'd work with my type of bedding. I put Custer's top dog brand dogs on and nightlatch with a very shallow notch. I use a blend of dust dry dirt mixed 1 part dirt to 2 or 3 parts peat and use no pan covers or anything under the pans.

I was never a fan of the 550's either. I've owned several dozen of them.

I've been using peat also. 10 traps and 6 Red foxes in 11 days speaks for itself.

Mb 550 would be a good coyote trap except for the jaw design and size of the jaws. For long legged critters a larger traps has many benefits, the jaw design and smaller area inside makes it on the smaller end for a coyote and cat trap IMO. If the Cavens could increase the trap size to have close to a 6" spread n/s and 5 1/2 or more E/W with those cast jaws and standard levers would be a much better predator trap IMO. yet they where filling a market with a heavy well built smaller sized trap. For mixed species.
The few bridger dogless I played with not my thing, I Feel if they would have kept the pan hook up more like an older Montgomery or even the newer Montgomery dog less made by victor they would have had a much better pan set up for those that are dogless fans.
